A Los Angeles jury has found Meta and Alphabet’s Google guilty of negligence for designing social media platforms that harm young users, awarding a total of $6 million in damages. According to media reports, Meta was held liable for $4.2 million and Google for $1.8 million.

The case centers on a 20-year-old woman, referred to as Kaley in court, who began using Instagram and YouTube as a minor. She told the jury she became addicted to the platforms because of features such as the infinite scroll, which encourages endless viewing.

The jury concluded both companies were negligent in how their platforms were designed, and that they failed to warn users or caretakers about the risks posed — especially to minors. Jurors deliberated for more than 40 hours over nine days before reaching their decision.

Landmark Case Sets Industry Precedent

Beyond the $3 million in initial compensatory damages, jurors also recommended $3 million in punitive damages, citing evidence that Meta and Google acted with malice, oppression or fraud by prioritizing engagement and profit over children’s well‑being. Though judges must still finalize punitive awards, this element of the verdict emphasizes that the companies’ conduct went beyond simple oversight.

This ruling represents the first of more than 1,600 consolidated lawsuits against major social media platforms in California, a process legal experts describe as a test case for how courts might handle future claims linking platform design to harm in younger users.

“Today’s verdict is a referendum — from a jury, to an entire industry — that accountability has arrived,” said Kaley’s lead counsel, according to media reports.
