In a decisive late-night digital enforcement move, the Government of India has blocked five over-the-top platforms for allegedly streaming objectionable and unlawful content, triggering fresh debate over content regulation in Indiaโs fast-growing OTT ecosystem.
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has officially directed that access to MoodXVIP, Koyal Playpro, Digi Movieplex, Feel, and Jugnu be blocked across India, following due procedure under the Information Technology framework.
Why Were These OTT Apps Blocked?
According to sources, the banned platforms were found allegedly hosting content that violated Indian laws, including material categorized as obscene, vulgar, or against public morality. Authorities stated that repeated advisories and notices were either ignored or insufficiently addressed by the platforms.
Tightening the Noose on Unregulated Digital Platforms
India has witnessed explosive OTT growth since the pandemic, with both global giants and smaller independent platforms entering the market. While major players such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+ Hotstar operate under structured compliance systems, several lesser-known apps have increasingly come under scrutiny for bypassing content norms.
This latest action suggests the government is now intensifying enforcement beyond warnings and advisory notices.
A Larger Policy Shift?
Industry observers believe this move could be part of a broader digital content clean-up strategy. Over the past few years, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has strengthened oversight under IT Rules 2021, mandating grievance redressal mechanisms, content classification, and stricter due diligence for publishers.
The blocking of these five platforms may indicate that enforcement has now moved from advisory to punitive.
