Apple is focused on increasing value addition in India for its iPhone and AirPods, as an inclusive strategy to reduce its reliance on China for the supply chain. According to reports, the technology firm's discussions with key players like Karnataka-based Aequs, US-based Jabil, and Flextronics are still ongoing. This is a strategic move taken to influence the manufacturing of various components in India.
As per the Business Standard reports, the American firm actively seeks a deeper collaboration with Indian and non-Chinese vendors while searching for partnership options. As part of this initiative, the Cupertino-based company is negotiating with key partners. US-based Flextronics is proposed for power equipment production in India, while Jabil, an American manufacturing solutions provider, may manage the production of plastic enclosures for AirPods.
Additionally, electronics manufacturing services provider Karnataka-based Aequs is amid the discussion for delivering non-iPhone enclosures. The firm is also digging into the partnership opportunity with companies in Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Karnataka to produce various components as part of encouraging domestic production and nourishing value addition in India.
Appleโs global vendors are also interacting with Tata Group companies. Apart from its existing partnership with Tata Electronics, Apple is exploring opportunities for manufacturing capital equipment, which is crucial for boosting domestic value addition in its Indian operations. Furthermore, it is also seeing for Indian partners to accommodate joint ventures to produce camera modules and displays.
Neither Jabil Aequs, Flextronics, Apple, or Tata Groups responded on the matter.
In 2002, Apple established a partnership with Japanese lithium-ion phone cell battery manufacturer - TDK, to be its first major client in India.
