As the demand for mobile accessories continues to surge, competition in the market intensifies, making innovation and customer service more crucial than ever. UNIX India has emerged as a key player in this dynamic landscape, offering a wide range of mobile phone accessories to meet consumer needs. In this exclusive interview, Rajeev Ranjan, Editor of Digital Terminal, speaks with Imran Kagalwala, Co-Founder of UNIX India, to discuss the rise of smart wearables, the company’s diverse product offerings, and their commitment to exceptional customer support.
Rajeev: How will the recent reduction in Basic Customs Duty (BCD) on charger components affect the competitiveness of Indian mobile accessory manufacturers?
Imran: The recent reduction in BCD on charger components will provide a significant advantage to Indian mobile accessory manufacturers by lowering production costs, making locally produced accessories more competitive in terms of pricing compared to imports. This cost efficiency will not only enhance profit margins but also create opportunities for manufacturers to invest in R&D and innovation, which are essential to staying competitive in a fast-evolving market. Additionally, as the industry increasingly moves towards localization, this policy strengthens India's position as a manufacturing hub, enabling domestic brands to scale operations and contributing to the 'Make in India' initiative.
Rajeev: What trends are you observing in the adoption of smart wearables among Indian consumers, and how do you expect this segment to grow in the coming years?
Imran: We’re witnessing tremendous growth in India’s smart wearables market, fuelled by rising health consciousness and the growing demand for connected devices. Consumers are increasingly adopting smartwatches, fitness trackers, and even smart rings, not just as fashion statements, but as essential tools for tracking fitness and managing their lifestyle. In the coming years, we expect this segment to expand rapidly, especially with the launch of more affordable options that offer enhanced health monitoring features, extended battery life, and seamless smartphone integration. This evolution is likely to drive deeper penetration into tier-2 and tier-3 cities, beyond the metros.
Rajeev: Could you shed light on your key manufacturing initiatives and how they align with the government's ‘Make in India’ initiative?
Imran: Our state-of-the-art manufacturing facility, spanning 70,000 sq. feet, manages every aspect from R&D to the complete design and development of new products, employing over 700 skilled professionals. With a daily production capacity of 35,000 data cables, 10,000 neckbands, 5,000 power banks, and 55,000 mobile phone covers, we are not only competing with national brands but also providing strong competition to international players. This fosters the adoption of locally produced products, fully supporting the government's ‘Make in India’ initiative.
Rajeev: How does your product portfolio cater to the evolving demands of Indian consumers, particularly with regard to affordability and quality?
Imran: Our product portfolio is designed to meet the dual priorities of Indian consumers: affordability and quality. For example, our 50,000mAh power bank with an SOS light and our power banks with attached USB cables demonstrate our understanding of consumer needs and our commitment to building products that solve real-world problems. We offer high-performance devices that reflect the trend of premiumization, while also providing budget-friendly solutions. By consistently investing in research and product development, we ensure that our offerings stay aligned with evolving customer preferences.
Rajeev: How do you ensure that your customers receive best after-sales service support?
Imran: We believe that after-sales service is just as important as the product itself, which is why we’ve built an extensive network of service centres nationwide, supported by seamless digital support channels via our website and customer helplines for quick issue resolution. For any product that doesn't function properly, we have a no-questions-asked policy for immediate returns or replacements. We actively listen to customer feedback and incorporate it into our new designs, ensuring our retail partners are aligned with this customer-first approach.
