As enterprises in Asia Pacific accelerate digital transformation, the need for scalable, intelligent, and easy-to-manage IT solutions is at an all-time high. To understand how Progress is meeting these demands, Rajeev Ranjan, Editor, Digital Terminal, spoke with John Yang, Vice President–Sales, APJ, Progress. He shared insights on how AI, automation, and channel partnerships are shaping the company’s growth in India and beyond.

Rajeev: How is Progress leveraging AI, machine learning, and automation to create future-ready solutions?

John: AI has been integral to our strategy and product roadmap for many years. The AI across our product portfolio empower customers to innovate, streamline operations and drive meaningful efficiency. With Progress, our customers gain the tools, processes and expertise needed to unlock the full potential of AI.

Rajeev: How does WhatsUp Gold differentiate itself from competing network monitoring platforms in terms of scalability, ease of use, and alerting?

John: WhatsUp Gold stands out by offering an intuitive interface that makes finding and fixing network problems easier. Its auto-discovery and interactive topology maps are favoured by many users, providing them instant visibility into their network, while customizable dashboards and workflows make it easy to tailor the experience to different roles or needs.  WhatsUp Gold is robust and cost effective, easier to deploy and manage, especially for mid-sized teams that want powerful features without a steep learning curve.

On the scalability and alerting front, WhatsUp Gold handles hybrid environments well and supports a wide range of protocols like SNMP, NetFlow, and sFlow. Its alerting system is flexible, you can set thresholds, automate responses, and reduce noise with targeted notifications. The recent introduction of Network Traffic Analysis Plus (NTA+) offers advanced network traffic analytics, it strikes a solid balance between functionality and simplicity, making it a great fit for organizations that need reliable monitoring without overcomplicating things.

Rajeev: Could you elaborate on how Flowmon uses machine learning and anomaly detection to identify and respond to advanced persistent threats (APT)?

John: Flowmon is a leading flow-based network monitoring software, along with its advantage in scalability, low overhead, trend analysis and security use cases.  Flowmon is especially useful in large-scale, distributed, enterprise and service provider networks. Flowmon also employs advanced machine learning and AI-driven anomaly detection to uncover and respond to sophisticated threats, including advanced persistent threats (APT). At the core of this capability is the Flowmon Anomaly Detection System (ADS), which applies intelligent algorithms to identify unusual patterns in network traffic and detect deviations that may indicate malicious activity.

Our AI models leverage behavior pattern analysis and intelligent anomaly detection to go far beyond traditional traffic monitoring, enabling detection across the entire attack lifecycle — from the first signs of compromise to data exfiltration. To accelerate and enhance incident response, Flowmon also uses large language models (LLMs) to generate supervised recommendations for mitigation. These recommendations are tailored to the detected anomaly, providing security teams with clear, context-aware guidance for containment, remediation, and prevention — while keeping human oversight in the decision-making loop.

These AI capabilities are further strengthened by additional proprietary detection techniques and intelligence sources that complement machine learning, creating a multi-layered defense without relying solely on static rules. While we don’t disclose the specifics, this combination ensures Flowmon remains effective against both known and emerging threats.

The result is a smart, adaptive, and proactive security solution that empowers security teams with actionable insights and automated responses, keeping them ahead of even the most advanced cyber adversaries.

Rajeev: What industries or customer segments are showing the strongest adoption of Flowmon and WhatsUp Gold?

John: For Flowmon, in APJ, we see strong adoption across various sectors, including the public one, government, manufacturing, banking and more.

Flowmon supports a wide range of flow data formats, making it highly adaptable to various network environments. Both Flowmon and WhatsUp Gold sees strong adoption from customers of all sizes, across a wide range of industries, particularly in sectors where IT uptime and network visibility are mission-critical. These include government agencies, municipalities, education, healthcare, and enterprises in finance and manufacturing.

Flowmon customer’s typical use cases are identifying top talkers and applications, detecting anomalies in traffic patterns and planning for bandwidth with long-term trend analysis. It stands out for it’s low resource consumption and large network scalability. On What’sUp Gold, Public sector organizations often use it to monitor infrastructure like routers, switches, and cloud services (e.g., Azure, Office 365), while private companies value its ability to detect issues before they impact users proactively. Customer feedback highlights its versatility and ease of use across different environments.

Longtime users report success in tailoring WhatsUp Gold to their specific needs, whether it's for monitoring disk usage, server health, or bandwidth consumption. Its flexible licensing model and intuitive dashboards make it especially appealing to IT departments in mid-market organizations that want enterprise-grade features without the complexity or cost of larger platforms.

Rajeev: How is Progress building its channel partner ecosystem and go-to-market strategy in India?

John: In Asia Pacific, our Go-To-Market strategy is to get close to our customer through our local channel partners. In India, we have grown our business through working closely with value-add distributor such as RoundRobin, who plays a pivotal role in expanding our reach within the broader channel ecosystem.  We offer a comprehensive portfolio of products and solutions that empower partners to address their customers’ challenges effectively. At the same time, we invest heavily in educating, training, and equipping partners so they can confidently take our solutions to market and accelerate their own business growth.

Rajeev: What growth targets have you set for 2025 and beyond in specific regions, such as APAC or India?

John: Our growth ambitions for APAC and India are significant. We see tremendous potential across the region’s emerging markets and are investing to expand both our partner ecosystem and customer reach. In India specifically, our growing organization is at the forefront of developing cutting-edge technologies in AI powered data platform, digital experience and infrastructure management. Our focus is deepening our presence, strengthening local partnerships, and helping more organizations leverage our technology to accelerate digital transformation and long-term growth.
