The biofuel landscape is evolving rapidly, driven by advancements in technology and sustainability. Innovative processes and policies are reshaping the industry, promoting greener alternatives and reducing environmental impact. BiofuelCircle is one-of-its-kind online marketplace in India, specially designed for biomass and biofuels. The company is working aggressively towards reshaping the biofuel landscape in the country. In an Exclusive conversation with DT, Ashwin Save, Co-founder & COO, BiofuelCircle spoke about many aspects of biofuel sector. Read below the excerpts:

Q: How has your perspective on the bioenergy industry and its technological advancements changed over the last few years?

A: In our three years of operations, the critical role of digitalization in disrupting the biofuel sector has never been more evident. Unlike previous attempts relying on government policies and incentives, these methods have fallen short in creating the comprehensive systemic changes needed to unlock the full potential of bioenergy. India stands at the brink of a digital revolution, propelled by widespread smartphone adoption and a robust digital payment infrastructure. In this opportune environment, platforms like ours play a pivotal role in reshaping the biofuel landscape.

Effective interventions in the biofuel sector demand simultaneous involvement and connection of farmers, MSMEs, and large industries. Digitalization emerges as the solution, offering efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and scalability. A primary challenge facing the sector is the limited market access for farmers and small businesses. Digital technology acts as an equalizer, providing everyone with crucial information on prices and market trends. It empowers industries and business owners to engage in transactions confidently, relying on the platform for seamless delivery, payment, and necessary verifications.

Moreover, the digital platform opens new avenues for finance by improving access to better credit. Perhaps most notably, the platform's greatest value lies in facilitating green traceability and green credits, catalyzing India's transition towards a more sustainable future. This three-year milestone marks not only BiofuelCircle's journey but also a significant stride towards a digitally transformed, environmentally conscious biofuel sector in India.

Q: Please tell us about your core product. How do you see the impact of BiofuelCircle's technology within the biofuel sector?

A: Pioneering a distinctive online marketplace in India, BiofuelCircle is dedicated to biomass and biofuels, integrating cutting-edge digital technology with a robust physical ecosystem. This innovative platform brings together stakeholders from various regions across India, fostering business growth and creating new opportunities within the Farm-to-Fuel sector. Notably, BiofuelCircle is committed to promoting a circular economy for agri-waste, empowering rural communities, and actively contributing to the reduction of carbon emissions.

Addressing prominent issues in India's agricultural landscape, BiofuelCircle recognizes the challenges posed by small, dispersed farms that make mechanization difficult, resulting in inefficient waste disposal. The prevalent practice of burning waste due to its convenience and cost-effectiveness exacerbates environmental concerns. Agri residue production, primarily concentrated in rural areas, faces a demand divide with more developed markets. BiofuelCircle steps into this space as a solution, bridging gaps through its innovative marketplace platform.

Functioning as a crucial link between buyers and sellers, BiofuelCircle extends their reach, equips them with decision-making tools, offers transparent price information, ensures equal access for all stakeholders, and manages the complexities of transport and logistics. Leveraging a cloud-based marketplace, the platform not only addresses challenges in the bioenergy supply chain but also seeks to make a positive impact on the economy, community, and the environment. In essence, BiofuelCircle's vision goes beyond business, aiming to create a sustainable and interconnected ecosystem with far-reaching benefits.

Q: How BiofuelCircle is enabling a farm-to-fuel economy for every participant?

A: At the grassroots level, numerous companies are embracing solid biofuels as a sustainable substitute for coal in diverse industries like food, pharmaceuticals, dairy, paint, rubber, and tires. Traditionally, these industries have relied on steam generated by burning coal to fuel their processes. However, with a growing commitment to carbon neutrality and reducing carbon footprints, companies are seeking alternatives. In this shift, BiofuelCircle emerges as a pivotal player, aiding companies in transitioning from coal to briquettes and pellets—effectively bio-coal sourced from agricultural residue.

On the other side, farmers serve as the primary contributors of raw materials for biofuels, with entities in the middle of the supply chain responsible for converting agri-residue into valuable biofuels like briquettes and pellets. This specific segment of the market is where BiofuelCircle directs its focus, facilitating the transition towards environmentally friendly and sustainable energy solutions. By connecting producers and consumers in this crucial supply chain, BiofuelCircle contributes to the broader objective of fostering eco-friendly practices and reducing the carbon impact of industrial processes.

Q: What obstacles do you encounter when implementing this technology, and what strategies do you employ to overcome them?

A: Our strong conviction lies in the transformative power of digitalization as the key enabler within the bioenergy supply chain, unlocking India's bioenergy potential. Contrary to the common misconception that progress requires high-tech solutions, we advocate for advanced yet suitable technology that facilitates disruption. Tailoring our approach to each segment of the supply chain, we strategically implemented digitalization. For biofuel consumers, primarily corporate entities, we recognized the preference for web applications over mobile apps, especially in office settings. Understanding the apprehension of some corporate IT departments, we fine-tuned our web app to cater to the needs of large organizations. Conversely, our biomass processors, often on the move within manufacturing plants, required a mobile-centric solution. Hence, our mobile app focused on delivering processor and seller-related functionalities to accommodate their dynamic work environments.

Addressing the communication preferences of farmers and Biomass Bank operators, who commonly use WhatsApp, we innovatively introduced a WhatsApp bot. This conversational tool simplified transactions, recognizing that a new mobile app would entail a learning curve for these users. Furthermore, anticipating the future, we are in the process of deploying smart sensors to automate data collection, minimizing the reliance on manual inputs.

In essence, our strategic use of technology, balancing advancement with appropriateness, facilitates a seamless transition to digitalization, ensuring efficiency and user-friendly experiences across diverse segments of the bioenergy supply chain.

Q: Please define the role of logistics in the Bioenergy Supply chain.

A: Logistics plays a pivotal role in the bioenergy supply chain, efficiently overseeing the movement of biomass, biofuels, and related materials from producers to consumers. This involves key functions like selecting suitable transportation methods, ensuring proper inventory management, overseeing storage facilities, maintaining quality control, and implementing supply chain visibility systems for real-time tracking. Cost efficiency is paramount, achieved through route optimization, reduced fuel consumption, and minimized handling costs. Moreover, logistics contributes to sustainability by promoting eco-friendly transportation methods, thus reducing environmental impact. It serves as an indispensable component in streamlining the entire bioenergy supply chain, ensuring a consistent, cost-effective, and environmentally responsible flow of resources.

On our platform, we go beyond facilitating the publication of requirements, receiving offers, and vendor selection. We take a comprehensive approach by managing logistics to extend coverage and streamline operations. With a roster of multiple registered transporters, we offer competitive pricing and the flexibility to schedule and transport according to specific requirements, enhancing overall operational efficiency. This ensures that our platform not only connects stakeholders but also optimizes the logistical aspects crucial to the success of the bioenergy supply chain.
