Surveillance data is growing at an unprecedented pace, demanding smarter, faster, and more resilient storage solutions. To decode how the storage industry is adapting, Rajeev Ranjan, Editor, Digital Terminal spoke exclusively to Rajesh Gupta, Director & Country Manager – India/SAARC Sales, Micron Technology. In this conversation, Mr. Gupta shares key insights on how Micron is addressing the challenges of high-volume video data with next-gen SSDs, innovations in edge-to-cloud storage architectures, and breakthrough technologies like PCIe Gen 5 and G9 NAND.
Rajeev: How is the storage industry responding to the explosive growth of surveillance video data in terms of capacity, performance, and cost-efficiency?
Rajesh: The global video surveillance storage market is experiencing significant growth and is projected to reach $27.8 billion by 2030, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12.2% from 2025, according to Grand View Research. This increase is driven by rising security concerns and the expansion of IoT. In India, the market is estimated to grow from USD 1.53 billion in 2025 to USD 2.39 billion by 2030, with a CAGR of 9.3%.
The storage industry faces challenges in developing denser and more affordable solutions to meet the increasing demands of video surveillance data. The HDD industry has encountered limitations, with expectations of achieving 50TB+ HDDs by the end of the decade. It is an important period for the storage surveillance industry to assess and provide innovative solutions, such as utilizing dense SSDs available today (e.g., 60TB, with expectations of 120TB SSDs soon). These solutions will enable extreme consolidation due to their high performance, ability to handle various workloads, long lifespan (still being TLC SSD), and capacity to create streams for applications like AI, analytics, and automation within the same solution.
Rajeev: What innovations in storage technologies are enabling better management of continuous, high-volume surveillance data?
Rajesh: Micron’s G9 NAND-based storage solutions and PCIe Gen 5 adoption have significantly reduced TCO. The 6550 Gen 5 NVMe 60TB+ TLC SSDs, with up to 14GBps throughput, can handle archival and other enterprise data. This single-tier solution lowers TCO by integrating data storage, analytics, IoT, and AI within a unified framework.
Rajeev: What are the emerging trends in hybrid storage architectures combining edge, on-premises, and cloud storage for surveillance applications?
Rajesh: Edge computing integration offers reduced latency, real-time processing, and minimizes data movement. Micron's DDR5 6400 RDIMM modules enhance edge analysis speed. Micron MRDIMMs with 8800 speed grade provide 39% higher bandwidth and 40% lower loaded latency than RDIMMs. Hybrid storage architectures streamline applications like AI, analytics, and automation, increasing the value of surveillance data and speeding up data ROI.
Rajeev: Can you highlight any of your flagship storage product designed for 24/7 workloads?
Rajesh: Micron's 6550 TLC Gen 5 NVMe SSD delivers best in class performance up to 14GBps with mainstream endurance for large block workloads. Based on Micron's advanced G9 NAND, it is three generations ahead of competitors. It also boasts best-in-class power efficiency, using up to 40% less power than rival 60TB SSDs. Users can achieve dense configurations: 44.2PB in a single rack with 36 servers (E3.S form factor) or 26.5PB with 18 servers (U.2 form factor). Designed for continuous operation, the Micron 6550 comes with a 5-year warranty.
Rajeev: How do your products address challenges like data protection, redundancy, and RAID support in surveillance environments?
Rajesh: Micron's 6550 features SPDM 1.2, SHA-512, FIPS 140-3 L2 certifiability, SGL, and SRIS for security. Its integrated architecture of NAND, DRAM, controller, and firmware ensures quality for workload consolidation. Micron SSDs include RAIN for resilience and support both software and hardware RAID configurations. The Storage Executive tool aids in managing SSDs in RAID setups.
