“Generative AI Is Expected To Be A Catalyst For Data Creation”

Despite market difficulties, Seagate anticipates sustained demand for mass-capacity storage, especially in the enterprise sector. In 2024, the company foresees the dominance of Generative AI (Gen AI) and Web3, emphasizing the need for enhanced hard drive areal density to meet escalating storage demands. Sameer Bhatia, Director - Asia Pacific Consumer Business Group and Country Manager for India & SAARC at Seagate Technology, outlines how the company is poised to achieve storage efficiencies.

DT: How was your overall performance in the CY 2023? What are your expectations in terms of business performance and market sentiments in 2024?

Sameer: Though the market remains challenging, we continue to see the ongoing migration of workloads to the cloud. On top of that, generative AI is expected to be a catalyst for data creation, underpinning future demand for mass capacity storage. In today’s earliest stages of gen AI development, you’re seeing the necessary first steps of building and training AI models. The next stage of development will yield enterprise-specific use cases that leverage trained AI models to convert data into value-enhancing applications. Cost-effective mass storage will be critical and we see HDD as a long-term beneficiary.

DT: Could you please tell usabout two major tech trends that will dominate in 2024?

Sameer: In 2024, two significant tech trends will be Generative AI (Gen AI) and Web3, both necessitating advancements in hard drive areal density. Gen AI's democratisation will escalate data storage demands, as data centres and enterprises move towards high-density hard drive storage to manage the surging data volumes essential for AI and machine learning models.

This trend further aligns with the rise of Web3, where decentralised applications and blockchain technology also require enhanced data storage solutions. The decentralised nature of Web3, built on blockchain principles, necessitates robust and secure data storage infrastructures to support the transparent and trustless transactions inherent in this paradigm.

The exploding demand for storage has certainly put a strain on the storage products today, requiring continued and even accelerated innovation to cope with the demand. For hard disks, a technology that stores more than 80% of the world's enterprise data in the data centre and in the cloud today, the most effective way to increase capacity is by increasing the areal density --- the amount of data that can be stored in a disk.

DT: What is your current channel strength and how are you planning to strengthen your partner network in 2024?

Sameer: Our current channel strength at Seagate is robust, driven by a comprehensive partner programme that empowers vendors and distributors in India.

Seagate will continue to build a robust partner base through this programme, providing comprehensive training sessions and seminars as well as working on co-marketing initiatives. Seagate will also continuously provide training for partners to better understand evolving opportunities in addition to regular products and technology trainings.

Additionally, our Seagate SkyHawk Partner App plays a crucial role in facilitating real-time communication. It provides partners with immediate access to essential information, such as storage needs, investment calculations, online warranty service bookings, and direct connectivity to SeaCare centres, ensuring they are always up-to-date and can meet the expectations set by our business.
