Atul Bansal, Group Head IT at Gateway Distriparks Limited shares his journey of transforming leadership through adaptive information systems, overcoming challenges with innovative OCR solutions, and preparing for future disruptions in logistics with AI, IoT, and blockchain advancements.

DT: What has been the most significant achievement in your career as a IT Head, and how has it shaped your approach to technology leadership.

Atul: One of the most significant milestones in my journey, as it relates to leadership in technology, was transitioning from being a static information provider to becoming a more interactive and adaptive information provider for effective decision making. This shift mirrored a major transformation in how leadership in technology is evolving today—from just managing systems to facilitating dynamic decision-making, communication, and problem-solving.

DT: Can you describe a pivotal moment or challenge in your professional journey that greatly influenced your career path or leadership style?

Atul: One of the toughest decisions was pursuing an OCR (Optical Character Recognition) project to track containers in the yard without manual intervention. Despite initial scepticism, criticism, and technical challenges, I stayed committed and led the project through four years of development. Launched in April 2024, with the achievement of 99.99% accuracy, which helps in overcoming doubts and establishing us as a pioneer in OCR implementation in India. This success has led other companies to seek my advice on similar challenges.

This shift influenced how I approach "leadership" in conversations—by leading with empathy, being adaptable to diverse communication styles, and offering guidance that considers both technical accuracy and the emotional or contextual nuances of what users need. It’s a combination of being both an advisor and a collaborator.

DT: What emerging technology trends do you believe will have the biggest impact on the IT industry in the near future, and how are you preparing your organization to adapt to these changes?

Atul: Several emerging technologies are poised to significantly impact the IT industry in the near future. The logistics industry is on the brink of several potential disruptions, with technology and evolving market demands driving significant changes. The next disruption in logistics will be fuelled by advancements in Blockchain Technology, AI, IoT, ML, Advanced Robotics and Automation, Sustainability and Green Logistics. We initiated our digital transformation journey just before COVID-19 with projects designed to enhance customer interactions and operational efficiency.

The pandemic underscored the value of digital automation, leading us to expand these initiatives. We now utilise AI, IoT, and ML to improve operational efficiency and reduce movement costs, which has earned us recognition from the Government of India (Refer to “National Time Release Study Report 2024”). This transformation allows us to process cargo on the fastest movement which substantially reduce the time of delivery. positioning us well for future disruptions.
