AI is exponentially empowering businesses and individuals, revolutionizing how tasks are accomplished and insights are gained. The impact of AI-powered PCs is reshaping industries, enhancing productivity, and driving innovation. Leading tech brand AMD has a significant responsibility to deliver more powerful components to drive growth in this new era of computing. In a recent interview, Matthew Unangst, Senior Director of Commercial Client & Workstation at AMD, shared valuable insights with Rajeev Ranjan, Editor of Digital Terminal, about their vision and plans for AI-powered PCs, both in India and globally.

Rajeev: Could you please tell about the impact of AI PCs on the corporate workforce?

Matthew: As we consider commercial users in the enterprise, the AI PC is just in the early stages of deployment in these environments. Some of the initial benefits of having an AI PC include the ability to deliver better battery life by offloading certain functions.

Looking forward into the rest of 2024 and beyond, I anticipate many additional tools will become available that will improve employee productivity, make it easier to manage calendars, enhance collaboration, and simplify typical business tasks, whether working in Excel, PowerPoint, or other applications. We are in the very early stages of these capabilities, but the next few years are going to be really exciting.

Rajeev: What are the major challenges that CTOs will face when adopting AI solutions, and how can they overcome these challenges?

Matthew: In our engagements with customers and partners, we often encounter uncertainty about how to adopt and deploy AI technology. One of the most common questions we receive is about which applications can leverage this technology. Currently, there is a fairly limited set of applications that can fully utilize AI accelerators, but this is changing rapidly. At AMD, we are actively collaborating with over 100 ISVs to optimize their software and applications for AI technology.

Another concern we encounter is related to security and privacy. AI is relatively new, and there is uncertainty about its implications for security. We have collaborated closely with partners like HP and Lenovo in developing and bringing AI PCs to market. We ensure that the AI capability enhances user experience, performance, and battery life while also prioritizing security. AI PCs can actually improve security and privacy by allowing users to run workloads on their PCs instead of sending confidential information to the cloud.

In summary, while there are understandable concerns about AI, we are actively addressing them through intentional development and collaboration to ensure that AI PCs deliver not only improved performance but also enhanced security and privacy compared to traditional computing models.

Rajeev: How do you expect AI to impact digital life in the next few year, and the growing buzz around AI-supported PCs, especially in the Indian market?

Matthew: I anticipate a significant growth in the demand for AI PCs, both in India and globally. The advancements we can expect to see in the next year will primarily revolve around the applications that can leverage AI technology. AMD launched the first x86 AI PC processor in 2023, and much of our focus during the past year has been on enabling our ISV partners and application developers to utilize this new technology effectively. This involved not only developing the hardware but also ensuring that software developers could create new applications and capabilities to take advantage of it.

As these new capabilities start to roll out, I believe the year 2024 and 2025 will be very exciting. We will likely to see a lot of innovations on the software and application side that can leverage AI.

Rajeev: How do you see AMD’s collaboration with major PC makers to develop AI powered PCs?

Matthew: Our customers and partners are incredibly enthusiastic about the technology we're bringing to market, particularly the potential of our AI acceleration capabilities. One of the key aspects that excites them about working with AMD is our leadership technology across our entire portfolio. For example, in the PC realm, AMD offers leading AI capabilities for data centers, edge computing, and workstations, in addition to a strong focus on PCs. We are the only provider in the market that can offer AI technology spanning from the cloud to the edge to the endpoint.

Specifically regarding AI PCs, we are dedicated to innovation and delivering the best technology to our customers and partners. While we are introducing innovative AI technology, we are also advancing the performance and efficiency of our processors in other areas. This results in tangible benefits for our customers, such as notebooks that consume less power, provide better battery life, contribute to sustainability goals, and improve employee productivity.

Our customers are eager to work with us because they see us as a partner in growth. We are expanding our portfolios, especially in the AI PC space, and this momentum is expected to continue.

Rajeev: How does AMD assure and commit to changing the lives of its customers worldwide?

Matthew: AMD is deeply committed to the responsible deployment of AI. We prioritize ensuring that our AI technology is used in a manner that is ethical and responsible. To this end, we are actively engaged in large organizations focused on promoting responsible AI use.

Furthermore, we are committed to delivering comprehensive solutions that enhance productivity and efficiency, enabling users to perform their daily tasks more effectively. Whether it's collaborating in a video conference, working in Microsoft Office, or engaging in design work using applications that leverage our Ryzen AI technology, our goal is to develop products that improve the quality and productivity of the user experience for our customers.

While the AI space presents challenges and is rapidly evolving, it is also incredibly rewarding. Working towards the common goal of bringing the best technology to market and seeing the benefits it brings to end-users is both fulfilling and motivating.
