This week, YouTube achieved a major landmark as its premium subscription service surpassed 125 million subscribers worldwide. The milestone highlights YouTube’s deep connection with its users and underscores the platform’s commitment to constantly evolving to meet their growing needs. The YouTube Premium service offers ad-free streaming, offline and background video playback, and access to exclusive content via YouTube Music and Premium on payment-based subscriptions.
Neal Mohan, CEO at YouTube, shared the exciting news on his LinkedIn – professional networking site handle announcing, “YouTube Music and Premium has now surpassed 125 million subscribers globally.” He also expressed enthusiasm about YouTube’s vision of creating a shared space where users can uninterruptedly enjoy their favourite music and videos and connect with their best-loved artists with control over their content consumption.
Additionally, the YouTube CEO also revealed the platform’s plan to expand the Premium Lite services to the US from the start of this week. The service is also being tested in Germany, Thailand, and Australia, with a broader expansion for global users shortly.
The new Premium plan offers a more affordable price, allowing subscribers to stream most YouTube videos ad-free. This enables users to explore their interests more deeply, from learning and gaming to cooking. Additionally, YouTube sees this as an opportunity for creators and partners to reach a larger audience and expand the Premium ecosystem. With the introduction of more affordable premium content, the platform reflects its focus on giving broader choice and value to its global YouTube community. “Thank you to our YouTube teams and subscribers who helped us get this far!”
A week ago, the portal also shared crossing another milestone as it surpassed 1 billion monthly podcast users in an active state. According to Edion, the video sharing platform, including YouTube Music, has become the most frequently used platform to listen to podcasts in the US alone. At the end of 2024, it also revealed that viewers were streaming podcasts for more than 400 million hours on YouTube every month.
These milestones achieved by the video streaming platform are significant and reflect years of continuous focus and investment the firm has made to enhance the user experience on YouTube for both music listeners and podcasters.
YouTube is the world's largest video-sharing platform and a subsidiary of Alphabet, the parent company of Google. Acquired by Google on 9th October 2006, YouTube has since expanded significantly and become a crucial part of Alphabet’s digital ecosystem, creating bigger revenue through advertising, subscriptions, and content partnerships.
