Walmart has launched a fresh investigation into alleged financial irregularities at Flipkart after whistleblower complaints reportedly flagged kickbacks exceeding ₹150 crore ($16 million) involving employees in its smartphones and luggage and travel accessories (LTA) businesses. The probe has brought the e-commerce major’s vendor management practices, internal controls and business oversight mechanisms under renewed scrutiny.
According to a media reports, the allegations centre on employees allegedly receiving payments and other benefits from vendors in exchange for preferential treatment on Flipkart’s platform. The exact amount involved, the individuals concerned and the nature of the suspected misconduct are still being established.
B2B Operations Under Investigation
The investigation is examining transactions routed through Flipkart’s business-to-business operations, where employees are suspected of helping selected vendors secure commercial advantages.
In the smartphones business, the alleged arrangement reportedly involved payments linked to the transfer of mobile devices between businesses. Vendors allegedly received favourable treatment, including improved visibility on the marketplace, potentially strengthening their sales opportunities.
The complaints also cover Flipkart’s LTA category, where employees are suspected of accepting financial benefits or favours in exchange for business advantages. The allegations have not yet been conclusively established, and the investigation is expected to determine the scale and extent of any misconduct.
Two Earlier Probes Raised Red Flags
The latest investigation follows two earlier internal probes into alleged wrongdoing within Flipkart’s business operations over less than three years, according to reports.
The first investigation, conducted approximately two-and-a-half years ago, focused on the LTA division and reportedly resulted in at least three employees being terminated. A separate investigation into suspected irregularities in the smartphones business began around six months ago. One employee was reportedly found responsible for the alleged misconduct and resigned before termination proceedings could be completed.
The recurrence of allegations across the same business categories raises questions about the effectiveness of existing compliance mechanisms. Walmart is expected to assess the findings before deciding on further disciplinary or corrective measures.
Governance Comes Under Renewed Scrutiny
Flipkart operates multiple business channels, including its consumer-facing marketplace, Flipkart Wholesale and a separate B2B sales programme serving marketplace sellers. The latest allegations concern the potential misuse of business relationships and commercial processes to benefit selected vendors.
Although the reported ₹150 crore figure is relatively small compared with Flipkart’s reported FY26 revenue of more than ₹1.46 lakh crore, the implications extend beyond the financial amount. Any substantiated misconduct could prompt closer scrutiny of vendor selection, marketplace visibility decisions, transaction monitoring and employee accountability.
Walmart owns more than 80% of Flipkart, making the investigation significant for the US retail giant’s oversight of its Indian e-commerce business.
IPO Uncertainty Adds to Pressure
The investigation comes amid continued uncertainty over Flipkart’s proposed initial public offering (IPO), senior leadership departures and employee concerns about liquidity from stock options.
Earlier reports indicated that profitability remains a priority for Walmart as it evaluates Flipkart’s listing timeline. At least 14 vice presidents and senior vice presidents reportedly left the company over the past year, while more than 1,000 former employees approached Walmart’s board seeking comparable treatment in a potential stock buyback.
The latest probe adds another governance challenge as Flipkart works towards its longer-term financial and strategic goals. Its findings could determine whether additional employee action, stronger compliance measures or changes to vendor oversight are necessary. For now, the investigation remains ongoing, with the full extent of the alleged irregularities yet to be established.
