Arete's report highlights the significant impact of recent ransomware incidents on the automotive industry. The report delves into how these cyber disruptions are threatening dealership operations, supply chains, and the broader economic stability, with around 8 million U.S. jobs tied to the sector at risk.
It highlights major cases such as the CDK Global incident, where ransomware disrupted dealership software, leading to losses estimated at nearly $1 billion. Another incident involved AutoCanada, where a security breach further complicated the company’s ongoing financial struggles. Additionally, the recent data leak of Toyota's sensitive information underscores the pressing need for robust data security measures across the industry.
In the Indian context, as the country accelerates toward becoming the world’s third-largest automotive market by 2026, the adoption of connected vehicle technologies is growing rapidly, making cybersecurity an urgent priority. With a 300 percent rise in global cyber incidents targeting vehicles, India's expanding fleet of connected cars faces mounting risks. The report emphasizes the need for the industry to prioritize cyber resilience, especially in securing digital systems across supply chains and third-party partnerships.
Raj Sivaraju, President of Asia Pacific at Arete said, “At Arete, we recognize that understanding the shifting landscape of cyber risks is essential for businesses navigating these challenging times. For the automotive industry, the focus must extend beyond immediate responses to incidents. It is crucial to invest in building long-term resilience to protect against future disruptions, ensuring not only the safety of operations but also the stability of the broader economic ecosystem.”
The report indicates that these incidents have exposed vulnerabilities in how the industry manages third-party risks. As cyber risks continue to evolve, there is an increasing need for automakers and dealerships to strengthen their protective measures and rigorously assess cybersecurity practices across the supply chain to better safeguard their operations.
