OpenAI has appointed Sanjay Deshmukh as its first Vice President of Asia Pacific Sales, strengthening its commercial leadership as the company accelerates enterprise AI adoption and expands its presence across one of the world’s fastest-growing technology markets.

Based in Singapore, Deshmukh will lead OpenAI’s commercial operations across the Asia Pacific region. He will report to Chief Revenue Officer Dali Rajic and work closely with OpenAI’s regional leadership and teams as the company seeks to expand the use of AI across enterprises and build deeper relationships with customers and partners.

The appointment comes as OpenAI significantly increases its investments in Singapore, making the region an increasingly important part of its global AI and enterprise strategy.

Commenting on joining OpenAI, Sanjay shared on LinkedIn, “I’m excited to share that I’ve joined OpenAI as Vice President of APAC Sales. I’m especially proud to join a company whose mission is to ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity. What drew me to OpenAI is the opportunity to help leaders and organisations translate the potential of AI into meaningful outcomes for their employees, customers, and businesses. That starts with understanding what matters most to each organisation and applying AI where it can create the greatest impact.”

He further stated, “I’m looking forward to partnering with Dali Rajic Kiran Mani Oliver J. Andy Brown, as well as with our customers and the broader ecosystem across APAC. I’m equally excited to work alongside an exceptional team to help shape this next chapter of transformation.”

Enterprise AI Takes Centre Stage

Deshmukh’s appointment reflects OpenAI’s growing focus on converting the rapid interest in generative AI into sustained enterprise adoption.

As businesses across Asia Pacific increasingly deploy AI for productivity, automation, analytics, software development and business operations, OpenAI is looking to strengthen its commercial infrastructure to support organisations at scale.

The company’s decision to create a dedicated APAC sales leadership role also highlights the complexity and diversity of the regional market, where enterprises operate across different regulatory environments, languages, procurement models and levels of digital maturity.

Two Decades of Enterprise Technology Experience

Deshmukh brings more than 20 years of enterprise technology and business leadership experience to OpenAI. Prior to joining the company, he served as Vice President for Asia Pacific and Japan at Elastic, where he focused on expanding the company’s regional business, strengthening its partner ecosystem and deepening customer relationships.

Before Elastic, Deshmukh served as Senior Vice President for ASEAN and India at Snowflake, adding extensive experience in cloud-based data platforms and enterprise technology to his leadership profile.

His career also includes significant experience at VMware, where he held leadership positions including Vice President and Managing Director for Southeast Asia and Korea and Vice President of End-User Computing for Asia Pacific and Japan. Earlier in his career, he held roles at Citrix and SAP in India.

His experience across data platforms, cloud infrastructure, enterprise software and digital transformation closely aligns with the evolving enterprise AI market.

Singapore Becomes Strategic AI Hub

Deshmukh’s appointment comes as OpenAI deepens its investments in Singapore and the wider Asia Pacific region. OpenAI established its Singapore presence in 2024 and has since expanded its regional ambitions. In May 2026, the company signed a memorandum of understanding with Singapore’s Ministry of Digital Development and Information, committing more than SGD300 million to establish its first Applied AI Lab outside the United States.

The initiative, known as OpenAI for Singapore, is focused on enterprise AI deployment, talent development and broader access to AI technologies. The company expects its Singapore-based technical team to grow to more than 200 roles over the coming years.

OpenAI has also reportedly explored a significantly larger office footprint in Singapore, further underlining the country’s growing importance to its Asia Pacific strategy.

AI Competition Intensifies

OpenAI’s expansion comes as competition across the region’s AI market intensifies. Anthropic, Google, Microsoft and Nvidia are also strengthening their presence across Singapore and other major Asia Pacific markets.

For OpenAI, building a strong regional sales organisation will be critical as enterprises increasingly evaluate competing AI models, platforms and services. Microsoft’s deep enterprise footprint through Azure and Copilot, Google’s Gemini ecosystem and Anthropic’s growing enterprise push have created a highly competitive environment.

Against this backdrop, Deshmukh’s experience in building enterprise businesses across Southeast Asia and India could prove important as OpenAI looks to turn its growing regional investments into long-term customer relationships and commercial growth.

With Sanjay Deshmukh taking charge as OpenAI’s first APAC sales VP, the company is placing greater emphasis on regional enterprise sales, customer engagement and commercial execution. The move signals that OpenAI’s Asia Pacific strategy is moving beyond market expansion and infrastructure investments towards building a stronger, dedicated enterprise business across the region.
