OpenAI has concluded ‘Build What Moves India’, an initiative that brought together innovators to explore how AI could help make essential digital services simpler, more accessible, and more useful. The initiative drew over 13,000 registrations and culminated in Bengaluru, where 10 finalists presented working prototypes addressing challenges rooted in everyday experiences.
The initiative was grounded in the understanding that people who navigate essential services bring first-hand insight into where those services can improve. With access to AI tools and technical guidance, participants were encouraged to translate that knowledge into practical solutions
From ideas to working prototypes.
Of the builds submitted, 250 were shortlisted, with 10 finalists selected to present their prototypes. The initiative gave participants an opportunity to develop their ideas, learn through experimentation and demonstrate how technology could help address real-world needs
“People who use these services every day often know exactly where the friction lies,” said Varun Mayya. “We wanted to give them a platform to act on those observations, turn their ideas into something tangible and learn from one another. The response has shown just how much enthusiasm there is to build solutions that can make a difference in people's lives.”
Ideas built around real-world needs.
RaktKhoj, the winning concept, explores how families could more easily locate blood at nearby blood banks or connect with potential donors during an emergency. By bringing multiple options into a single search experience, the prototype aims to reduce the complexity of finding potentially life-saving information when time matters most.
Other shortlisted ideas included Samarthan, which uses voice or text inputs to help people draft cyber fraud complaints, and Atithi, which aims to simplify international travel by bringing visa eligibility checks, document preparation, and application tracking into one experience.
Together, these ideas reflect the range of everyday challenges that innovators chose to address, from urgent healthcare needs and digital safety to navigating complex application processes. They also demonstrate how AI can help people move beyond identifying a problem to building and testing a possible solution.
AI in service of public needs.
For OpenAI, ‘Build What Moves India’ reflects the opportunity to apply AI to challenges that directly affect people’s lives. Wider access to AI tools like Codex can enable more people to build, develop and iterate ideas informed by their own experience of essential services, bringing local knowledge into the design of potential solutions.
“The true promise of AI is its ability to improve how people access essential services and, in doing so, improve lives across India. Through Build What Moves India, we encouraged citizens to use our tools to solve the everyday challenges they face when accessing these services. With OpenAI tools like Codex, everyone is empowered to turn their experience into practical solutions that meet people where they are, across languages and modalities.” said Pragya Misra, Head of Strategy and Global Affairs, India, OpenAI.
The prototypes offer an early view of how locally informed AI applications could make essential digital services more accessible and responsive to people’s needs. As AI adoption grows across India, this focus on practical public benefit will be central to translating capability into impact.
