Two Nvidia-branded trailers were stolen from the facility of autonomous trucking company PlusAI in Fremont, California, in what appears to have been an attempted theft of high-value technology equipment. However, the thieves reportedly discovered that the trailers were not carrying expensive AI hardware but around 20 tons of sand used for autonomous vehicle testing.

The incident highlights the growing attention surrounding Nvidia’s branding amid increasing demand for AI hardware and the rising value of advanced computing equipment.

Thieves Apparently Mistook Trailers for Valuable AI Cargo

The two trailers were reportedly taken from the docks of PlusAI’s Fremont warehouse late Wednesday. One of the trailers prominently displayed both Nvidia and PlusAI branding, reflecting the companies’ work together in autonomous trucking and AI technology.

PlusAI uses sand inside its trailers to replicate the weight and conditions of real freight while testing its self-driving truck systems. Each trailer contained approximately 20,000 pounds of sand.

According to PlusAI Vice President of Marketing Lauren Kwan, the prominent branding may have led the thieves to believe that the trailers contained valuable technology equipment.

The trailers were discovered missing the following morning, with the company reporting the incident to the Fremont Police Department. Investigators found that the locks securing the trailers appeared to have been forced open, while PlusAI’s tractor cabs parked elsewhere at the facility were left untouched.

Trailers Recovered After Unexpected Tip

The stolen trailers were recovered within hours of the theft following an unusual coincidence. PlusAI’s vice president of legal received a message from a friend who had spotted two company-branded trailers outside an office in nearby Newark. The friend apparently was unaware that the trailers had been stolen and sent a photograph along with a congratulatory message.

PlusAI employees travelled to the location, identified the trailers and contacted police. Newark police subsequently recovered both vehicles and returned them to the company. According to the reports, the thieves appeared to have opened the trailers, discovered that they contained no valuable equipment and abandoned them. The sand reportedly remained inside.

Nvidia Branding Draws Attention

The incident comes amid growing concerns around the theft of expensive AI hardware and data-centre equipment in the US. Nvidia’s processors have become highly sought-after components as companies invest heavily in AI infrastructure, potentially making Nvidia-branded equipment an attractive target for criminals.

However, the stolen trailers did not contain Nvidia chips or other AI hardware. The sand was being used purely as simulated freight to help PlusAI test its autonomous trucking technology. The incident also illustrates how prominent technology branding can create assumptions about the value of equipment, even when the actual cargo is unrelated to high-value hardware.

The Fremont Police Department is continuing to investigate the theft, and no arrests had been reported at the time of the reports.
