Microsoft is set to operationalise its largest data centre in India by mid-2026, significantly strengthening the company’s artificial intelligence and cloud infrastructure presence in one of the world’s fastest-growing digital markets.

The upcoming hyperscale facility, being developed in Hyderabad, will become the biggest India-based data centre operated by Microsoft as the company accelerates investments to meet surging demand for AI-powered enterprise services, cloud computing and generative AI platforms.

The expansion comes at a time when global technology giants are aggressively scaling infrastructure across India, which is increasingly emerging as a strategic hub for artificial intelligence innovation, cloud operations and enterprise digital transformation.

Hyderabad Emerges as a Key AI Infrastructure Hub

According to reports, Microsoft India & South Asia's President, Puneet Chandok stated that the company is witnessing “massive demand” for Azure cloud services and Microsoft’s Copilot 365 AI assistant in India.

The Hyderabad facility is expected to play a crucial role in supporting rapidly growing enterprise workloads, AI deployments and cloud-native operations across industries. While Microsoft has not disclosed the exact capacity of the upcoming data centre, the company described the expansion as one of its fastest infrastructure rollouts globally.

Microsoft Expands Multi-Billion-Dollar AI Investments in India

The Hyderabad project forms part of Microsoft’s broader long-term investment strategy in India. The company had previously announced an investment commitment of nearly $17.5 billion in India, in addition to a separate $3 billion investment plan announced earlier in 2025.

A substantial share of this investment is being directed toward AI-ready cloud infrastructure, hyperscale data centres and advanced computing ecosystems designed to support next-generation enterprise AI adoption.

Azure and Copilot Adoption Accelerates Across Enterprises

The demand for Microsoft’s AI ecosystem is rising rapidly among Indian enterprises and IT services firms.

According to reports, companies including Infosys, Cognizant and Tata Consultancy Services each reportedly maintain around 50,000 Copilot licences.

The growing use of AI assistants, workflow automation and intelligent enterprise platforms is driving the need for larger regional infrastructure capable of handling compute-intensive AI workloads. Microsoft’s Azure platform is increasingly being deployed across industries to support cloud migration, AI integration, analytics and enterprise automation initiatives.

India Becomes a Strategic Battleground for Global AI Companies

Microsoft’s latest expansion also highlights intensifying competition among global technology companies in India’s rapidly expanding AI and cloud ecosystem. Companies including Alphabet and Amazon are also increasing investments in AI infrastructure, hyperscale cloud services and data centre operations across the country.

With more than one billion internet users and rapidly accelerating digital adoption, India is increasingly being viewed as one of the most strategically important markets for the future of artificial intelligence.

Microsoft Highlights Growing AI Talent Challenges

Alongside infrastructure expansion, Microsoft also acknowledged increasing competition for skilled AI professionals.

According to reports, Microsoft currently employs more than 22,000 people across multiple Indian cities, with local teams contributing to AI technologies and features being deployed globally.

However, Chandok reportedly noted that hiring skilled AI talent has become increasingly difficult amid soaring worldwide demand for expertise in machine learning, cloud engineering, cybersecurity and generative AI technologies.

He described the situation as a growing “war for talent,” adding that the hiring challenges being experienced in India mirror those seen globally.

India’s AI Infrastructure Boom Continues to Accelerate

Microsoft’s Hyderabad hyperscale facility is expected to become one of the company’s most strategically important infrastructure assets in India once fully operational.

The expansion further reinforces India’s growing role in the global AI economy as enterprises continue accelerating digital transformation initiatives and adoption of intelligent cloud technologies.

With AI workloads growing rapidly across sectors including IT services, finance, manufacturing, healthcare and retail, infrastructure providers are investing heavily in advanced data centres and cloud ecosystems capable of supporting the next generation of AI-driven innovation.
