The problem seems to primarily impact users who did not have cloud backups enabled for their Timeline history.

Several Google Maps users recently reported that their Timeline data, which tracks their location history, had been eradicated. As the issue gained attention on multiple social media platforms, Google acknowledged that a technical glitch had accidentally caused the deletion of some users' records.

The problem seems to primarily impact users who did not have cloud backups enabled for their Timeline history. Complaints flooded social media and tech forums, with many users expressing frustration over the unanticipated data loss. However, users with cloud backups activated have received emails from Google elaborating on the steps to recover their lost data.

According to a Reddit post showing an email from Google acknowledging technical issues causing the Timeline data to be deleted for some users, the firm will reach out to the affected accounts. Users with encrypted backup enabled were shown steps to import their data. Google also expressed concern over the frustration of people using Timeline to track locations and places they visited, while ensuring to improve their system for the future.

A spokesperson for Google, confirmed the situation to The Verge, stating that they briefly encountered a technical problem that led to the deletion of Timeline data for certain users. Most individuals with encrypted Timeline backups should be able to recover their data; however, those who didn't enable backups will not be able to retrieve the lost information.

How to Check Backup Status?

Concerned users can verify whether their cloud backup is enabled by following these simple steps:

1.      Open Google Maps on an Android or iOS device.

2.      Tap on the user icon.

3.      Go to 'Your Timeline.'

4.      Look for the cloud icon. If you see an arrow inside the icon, it means backup is enabled. If there's a line through it, the backup is off.

5.      If the backup is off, users can tap on the icon to adjust settings and enable cloud storage for future backups.

Currently, users affected by the issue have no other way to recover their lost data, highlighting the critical need for enabling backups. Google's official guidelines for recovering lost Timeline records are dependent entirely on the availability of cloud backups, leaving those without backups with no other options.
