Google has expanded the availability of Gemini in Chrome in India, bringing its AI-powered browsing assistant to all Android users in the country. The move extends capabilities previously available to desktop users, allowing people to summarise web content, ask questions about pages and access connected Google applications without leaving the browser.

Alongside the Android rollout, Google has introduced its Auto Browse feature in Chrome on desktop and Android for Gemini AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers in India. The update broadens Chromeโ€™s role from a conventional web browser to an AI-assisted platform that can help users understand online information and complete selected everyday tasks.

AI Assistance Directly Within Chrome

Gemini in Chrome is designed to help users interact with web content more efficiently. Android users can ask questions about the page they are viewing, obtain summaries of lengthy articles and explore information without repeatedly switching between tabs or applications.

The integration also connects with Google applications such as Keep and Calendar, enabling users to work with relevant information across supported services. In addition, users can customise and generate images through Nano Banana, bringing AI-powered creative capabilities into the mobile browsing experience.

The expansion builds on Googleโ€™s earlier introduction of Gemini in Chrome for desktop users in India and extends the experience to a wider audience through Android devices.

Auto Browse Targets Repetitive Online Tasks

Google has also expanded Auto Browse availability to eligible AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers using Chrome on desktop and Android. The feature is designed to assist with multi-step online activities that can otherwise require considerable manual effort.

Examples include completing lengthy forms, arranging parking for an event and ordering groceries. By assisting with these tasks, Auto Browse aims to reduce repetitive interactions and simplify routine online activities.

Unlike the general Gemini browsing assistant, which focuses on understanding and working with webpage content, Auto Browse is intended to help users carry out selected tasks across websites.

Security and User Control Remain Central

Automated browsing introduces additional considerations because AI systems may encounter misleading instructions or malicious content embedded in webpages. Google says its models are trained to identify known threats, including prompt injection attempts that try to manipulate an AI system into disregarding its intended instructions.

The company has also designed Auto Browse to seek user confirmation before completing certain sensitive actions. These safeguards are intended to retain user oversight while enabling the assistant to handle parts of a browsing task.

A Broader Role for AI in Web Browsing

The latest update reflects Googleโ€™s continued integration of generative AI into everyday digital services. By bringing Gemini to Android users and extending automated browsing to eligible subscribers, the company is expanding the ways users can search, understand and act on information online.

For users, the distinction will be between AI that helps interpret web content and AI that can assist with completing tasks. As these capabilities develop, security controls, clear confirmation processes and user oversight will remain important to building trust in AI-assisted browsing.
