The global humanoid robotics market is beginning to move from research and demonstrations towards commercial adoption, with around 7,000 humanoid robots sold worldwide in 2025 for industrial and professional service applications. While the number remains small compared with the broader robotics industry, growing investments and expanding deployments are creating expectations of significantly higher volumes in the coming years.
China is emerging as a major market for humanoid robots, supported by its large manufacturing base, established robotics ecosystem and strong investment in artificial intelligence and automation.
Humanoid Robots Still Represent a Small Market
The 7,000-unit figure highlights the early stage of humanoid robotics. Conventional industrial robots continue to dominate the global market, with hundreds of thousands of units deployed annually across manufacturing industries.
The International Federation of Robotics (IFR) has only recently started separately tracking humanoid robots, reflecting the category's relatively recent emergence as a commercial segment.
Many of the humanoid robots sold so far are being used by research organisations and companies for testing, development and physical AI data collection. This means current sales should not be viewed as equivalent to large-scale deployment across factories or workplaces.
China Gains Importance in Humanoid Robotics
China's position in the broader robotics industry gives it a strong base for expanding humanoid robot adoption. The country installed around 295,000 industrial robots in 2024, accounting for roughly 54% of global industrial robot installations, according to IFR data.
China's operational industrial robot population also exceeded 2 million units, creating a large manufacturing environment in which new robotic technologies can be tested and deployed.
Chinese robotics companies are developing humanoid machines for applications ranging from factory operations and logistics to other commercial and service environments. Automakers and manufacturers are also experimenting with humanoid robots as they evaluate where the technology can deliver practical benefits.
Industry Eyes Much Larger Volumes
The current market size contrasts sharply with forecasts for the next few years. Bank of America Global Research has estimated that global humanoid robot shipments could reach around 1.2 million units annually by 2030, indicating the scale of growth being anticipated by the industry.
Achieving such volumes would require a significant transition from pilot programmes and research projects to mass production and repeat commercial deployments.
Lower manufacturing costs will be particularly important. Humanoid robots combine sophisticated AI systems with cameras, sensors, actuators, batteries and advanced control systems, making them considerably more complex than many conventional industrial machines.
AI Could Accelerate Humanoid Robot Adoption
Advances in artificial intelligence are becoming an important driver for humanoid robotics. Newer AI models can help robots understand instructions, recognise objects, interpret their surroundings and perform multiple tasks rather than being restricted to a single repetitive function.
This general-purpose capability is one of the key reasons manufacturers are exploring humanoids for environments originally designed around human workers. However, reliability and safety remain critical before widespread deployment becomes practical. Robots need to operate consistently around people and handle changing physical environments while delivering sufficient economic value.
With 7,000 humanoid robots sold globally in 2025 against forecasts of 1.2 million annual shipments by 2030, the gap between today's market and the industry's expectations remains substantial.
China's manufacturing scale and established robotics ecosystem could make it an important driver of that transition. The next phase will depend on whether manufacturers can reduce costs, improve reliability and demonstrate clear commercial applications beyond research and limited pilot projects.
