Apple and Reliance Jio are bringing RCS business messaging to iPhone users in India, giving businesses a new way to communicate with customers through the native messaging experience. The development marks Apple’s entry into India’s business messaging market and strengthens the position of RCS as businesses increasingly look beyond traditional SMS and app-based communication.
Jio Business Messaging is powered by RCS through Jio’s partnerships with Apple and Google. Jio says it is the exclusive RCS provider for iOS in India, allowing businesses to reach supported iPhone and Android users through their default messaging applications.
The move is significant for businesses because RCS can deliver a much richer experience than conventional SMS. Instead of relying on plain text and links, companies can use verified business profiles, images, rich cards, carousels, suggested replies and action buttons to create more interactive customer conversations.
Bringing Rich Business Messaging to iPhone
Apple introduced RCS support on iPhone to improve messaging between iPhone and non-Apple devices. On supported networks, RCS enables features such as high-resolution photos and videos, links, delivery and read receipts and typing indicators through the Messages app.
Apple has also been working with Google and the wider industry to improve the security of RCS. In May 2026, Apple announced the beta rollout of end-to-end encrypted RCS messaging for compatible iPhone and Android users on supported networks.
Jio’s business messaging offering takes the RCS capability into the enterprise communication space. Businesses can use the service for customer notifications, offers, order updates, bookings, support and other interactions without requiring customers to install a separate application.
Businesses Get More Than SMS
Jio Business Messaging is designed to make the messaging experience more interactive. Its platform supports branded sender profiles, rich media, carousels, quick replies and action buttons, while businesses can integrate the service with CRM, ecommerce and marketing automation platforms through APIs and webhooks.
This gives enterprises another way to connect their existing customer-engagement systems with mobile messaging. A transaction alert, for example, can potentially become an interactive communication where customers can track an order, respond to a business or take an action directly from the message.
Jio already positions RCS as part of its broader JioCX customer engagement portfolio, alongside channels including SMS, WhatsApp, voice and email.
WhatsApp Competition Gets Stronger
The development could also intensify competition in India's business messaging market, where WhatsApp has become a major channel for customer engagement.
RCS offers a different model by bringing rich business communication into the phone’s native messaging environment. For businesses, this could make RCS useful for transactional communication and customer interactions alongside existing platforms rather than as an immediate replacement for them.
The addition of iPhone support is particularly important because it expands the potential audience for RCS beyond Android users. Jio says its service can reach customers on both Android and iOS devices on its network.
A New Opportunity for Businesses
The success of RCS business messaging will ultimately depend on adoption, pricing, network availability and how easily enterprises can integrate the channel into their existing communication systems.
For Apple, the partnership gives RCS a stronger business role in one of the world's largest mobile markets. For Jio, it expands the company's enterprise messaging proposition. And for businesses, it adds another native channel through which they can reach customers with richer and more interactive communication.
With Apple and Jio bringing business RCS to iPhones, India’s business messaging market is gaining another significant platform—and the competition for the customer’s inbox is set to become more intense.
