AI Giants Call for Slowdown as Sam Altman, Elon Musk Back Anthropic CEO’s Safety Push

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei’s call to “pace the frontier” wins public backing from OpenAI’s Sam Altman, Google DeepMind’s Demis Hassabis and Elon Musk, highlighting growing concerns over whether AI safety measures can keep up with rapidly advancing capabilities.

The global artificial intelligence industry is witnessing an unusual moment of alignment. Some of the biggest names in AI development have publicly backed a call to slow the pace of frontier AI development, arguing that safety measures and oversight need to advance alongside increasingly powerful systems.

The discussion was triggered by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, who published an essay titled “We Must Pace the Frontier”, calling for a more cautious approach to the development of advanced AI. Amodei’s proposal comes amid growing concerns about AI systems becoming more capable and autonomous, as well as recent incidents involving AI agents interacting with external systems.

What makes the development particularly notable is the response from leaders of competing AI companies. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Google DeepMind chief Demis Hassabis and xAI founder Elon Musk all publicly expressed support for Amodei’s broader position.

Sam Altman: “We Need to Pace the Frontier”

Sam Altman was among the first major AI executives to publicly endorse the proposal. In a post on X, Altman wrote: “I agree with Dario that we need to pace the frontier.”

He also specifically supported Amodei’s proposal to bring independent evaluators into AI companies, giving them employee-level access to assess safety practices. Altman said OpenAI would adopt the same approach and indicated that the company would share more details about its plans.

The proposal represents a significant shift in the conversation around frontier AI. Rather than simply calling for general caution, Amodei has suggested mechanisms through which outside experts could continuously examine how advanced AI systems are being trained and deployed.

Elon Musk: “Dario Is Right”

Elon Musk also joined the discussion on X, responding to Amodei’s proposal with a direct statement: “Dario is right.”

Musk has previously warned publicly about the potential risks associated with increasingly powerful AI systems. His latest response places him alongside leaders of companies that are otherwise competing aggressively in the development of frontier models.

The public agreement between Musk and Altman is particularly notable given their history of disagreements over AI development and OpenAI. Their support does not mean the companies have agreed on every aspect of AI policy, but it reflects a shared concern around the pace at which frontier systems are progressing.

Demis Hassabis Supports the Direction

Google DeepMind co-founder and chief Demis Hassabis also responded to Amodei’s proposal on X. Hassabis said the essay “points towards the right path forward”, while noting that the details still needed to be worked through.

Together, the responses from Altman, Musk and Hassabis represent a rare public convergence among major AI leaders around the need for stronger attention to safety as AI capabilities expand.

What Does “Pacing the Frontier” Mean?

Amodei’s proposal is not positioned as a call to stop AI development altogether. Instead, it focuses on creating stronger safeguards and coordination mechanisms so that safety work does not fall behind technological progress.

The proposal includes three broad areas. First, Amodei wants independent third-party evaluators to have permanent, employee-level access to AI companies’ systems so they can verify safety measures, report incidents and assess model alignment during training.

Second, he has called for greater coordination among democratic countries around AI safety standards. The third element involves broader international coordination on AI security, including engagement with governments such as China.

Anthropic has said it would unilaterally commit to the independent-evaluator component of the proposal, while calling for other frontier AI companies to adopt similar measures.

AI Safety Debate Enters a New Phase

The push comes against a backdrop of increasing debate over the risks posed by advanced AI. Recent incidents involving AI agents, concerns about autonomous capabilities and warnings from researchers have intensified scrutiny of how quickly frontier models are being developed.

At the same time, the industry faces powerful commercial and geopolitical incentives to continue advancing. AI companies are competing for customers, investment and technological leadership, while governments increasingly view AI capabilities as strategically important.

This creates a difficult question for the industry: Can major AI companies voluntarily slow or coordinate aspects of development when they are simultaneously competing to build the most capable systems?

Critics Question Industry-Led Oversight

Amodei’s proposal has also faced criticism. Some researchers and policy advocates have questioned whether AI companies should be responsible for determining the mechanisms through which their own technologies are evaluated.

Critics have also raised concerns about proposals that could facilitate greater coordination between major AI companies, arguing that such arrangements could create competition and regulatory issues. The uploaded source notes that some critics view industry-led oversight as an attempt to influence the regulatory framework rather than accept stronger external regulation.

The geopolitical dimension further complicates the debate. The US government has continued to frame AI development as part of strategic competition with China, while the Trump administration has expressed opposition to efforts to slow the technology’s advancement.

For now, the statements from Amodei, Altman, Musk and Hassabis signal a notable shift in the tone of the global AI conversation. The industry is no longer debating only how quickly AI can advance, but increasingly how safety, independent oversight and regulation can keep pace with that advancement.

Whether this unusual agreement among AI rivals leads to concrete safeguards—or remains largely a series of public commitments—will be closely watched as the next generation of frontier AI systems takes shape.
