TCS Commits $7.4 Billion to Build One-Gigawatt AI Data Centre Campus in Hyderabad

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) is making a major push into India’s rapidly expanding AI infrastructure market, with its HyperVault unit and partners committing ₹70,000 crore, approximately $7.4 billion, to develop a large-scale AI data centre campus in Hyderabad. Spread across 264 acres in Telangana, the planned facility will offer capacity of up to one gigawatt and is expected to become one of India’s largest dedicated AI infrastructure developments.

The investment highlights the growing scale of capital flowing into India’s data centre ecosystem as enterprises, hyperscalers and AI companies seek high-density computing infrastructure. Hyderabad Emerges as a Major AI Infrastructure Hub

The project will use green energy and incorporate water-neutral design principles, according to TCS. However, the company has not provided detailed definitions or publicly specified metrics explaining how the water-neutral claim will be measured.

This distinction is becoming increasingly important as AI data centres consume significantly more power and require advanced cooling infrastructure. Liquid cooling can support high-density computing, but water and energy management are becoming critical considerations as operators expand capacity.

The Hyderabad development comes amid growing private investment in India’s digital infrastructure. TCS’s data centre business previously attracted a $1 billion investment from TPG, reflecting increasing investor interest in the country's long-term AI and cloud infrastructure opportunity.

The Water Question Behind AI Infrastructure

While TCS has highlighted water-neutral design principles for the Hyderabad campus, India currently does not have an equivalent mandatory national disclosure framework requiring large data centres to publicly report detailed annual water consumption in the same manner as the European Union.

The comparison is particularly relevant as data centre operators increasingly promote sustainability credentials. In the EU, data centres with installed IT power of at least 500kW are required to report information including total water consumption and drinking-water consumption to a European database each year. The framework also covers indicators related to energy demand, waste heat recovery and renewable energy use.

The reporting requirement does not necessarily guarantee lower water consumption, but it creates a measurable record that allows regulators and stakeholders to assess resource use.

For India, the absence of comparable mandatory reporting leaves greater reliance on individual companies to define and demonstrate terms such as “water-neutral” or “sustainable” through their own disclosures.

$7.4 Billion Signals Confidence in India’s AI Future

The scale of TCS’s planned investment reflects the increasing importance of AI-ready infrastructure in India. A one-gigawatt campus represents a substantial commitment to high-performance computing capacity and positions Hyderabad as an important destination for next-generation data centre investments.

The development also underlines a broader shift in the technology industry. As AI workloads grow, infrastructure providers will increasingly need to balance compute density and performance with power availability, cooling requirements, water consumption and environmental impact.

TCS’s Hyderabad project therefore represents more than another data centre investment. It is a test of how India’s AI infrastructure expansion can combine massive computing capacity with transparent and measurable sustainability practices.

As billions of dollars continue to move into AI infrastructure, the next phase of India’s data centre growth may depend not only on how many gigawatts can be built, but also on how efficiently and transparently those gigawatts are operated.
