Transforming Tile Buying with Technology at Orient Bell Tiles

Jegatheeswaran Palsamy, Head of IT at Orient Bell Tiles, shares his journey of transforming the tile buying experience through digital innovation and addressing emerging trends like AI and cybersecurity in the IT industry.

DT: What has been the most significant achievement in your career as IT Head, and how has it shaped your approach to technology leadership?

Jegatheeswaran: At Orient Bell Tiles, one of the most significant achievements has been digitizing the tile buying and selling process. Key milestones aligned with business requirements include:

●       100% order placement through the mobile app, accessible anytime, anywhere.

●       Full visibility of order dispatch through TMS (Transportation Management System).

●       A dealer management app with live tracking of Orient Bell stock, tile images, color, pattern designs, and landing calculations.

●       A quick design view app that generates designs in 60 seconds as videos, images, and quotations, with a WhatsApp sharing option. Customers have created over 3 million designs in the last three years.

These achievements have shaped my leadership approach by emphasizing customer-centric innovation, digital transformation, and efficiency in business operations.

DT: Can you describe a pivotal moment or challenge in your professional journey that greatly influenced your career path or leadership style?

Jegatheeswaran: A pivotal moment in my career was leading a team during ERP project implementations with tight deadlines and limited resources. This included the implementation and upgrade of key business applications like DMS, CRM, the Field Force App, and the Sales Order App. Aligning these IT projects with business needs taught me valuable lessons in resilience, adaptability, and strategic thinking, as well as the importance of delivering value-added solutions.

DT: What emerging technology trends do you believe will have the biggest impact on the IT industry in the near future, and how are you preparing your organization to adapt to these changes?

Jegatheeswaran: Generative AI continues to stand out as a transformative trend. Organizations should invest in AI training for their teams and explore integrating AI tools into workflows to enhance productivity and innovation.

Cybersecurity is also critical, as cyberattacks have the potential to disrupt, damage, or destroy businesses. The rise of AI, especially generative AI, introduces new threats that hackers are already exploiting through techniques like prompt injection.

At Orient Bell Tiles, we have already initiated AI-enabled IT projects in sales, HR, and production, such as sales recommendations, preventive maintenance, and recruitment. Additionally, we have implemented an MDR solution from Gartner's No. 1 Customer Choice in cybersecurity to strengthen our cybersecurity posture.
