Arun Goyal, CIO of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, shares his journey from business leadership to designing India's integrated healthcare system and the role of emerging technologies like AI in the future of IT.
DT: What has been the most significant achievement in your career as a CIO, and how has it shaped your approach to technology leadership?
Arun: One of the most significant milestones in my career was transitioning to a business role, where I successfully rose to the position of President at “HCG Oncology Hospitals” and “Strand Life Sciences,” managing the business side effectively.
As a CIO, a proud moment came when I led the design of the integrated healthcare system for the country, ABDM (Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission), previously known as NDHM (National Digital Health Mission), at NHA. This experience shaped my leadership approach by allowing me to evaluate technological challenges from both business and technical perspectives, thanks to my exposure on both fronts.
DT: Can you describe a pivotal moment or challenge in your professional journey that greatly influenced your career path or leadership style?
Arun: The most pivotal moment in my career was switching from a purely technical background to business leadership, heading Paras Hospital as a Business Leader. This experience of managing and developing a multi-speciality hospital brought maturity to my leadership style, enabling me to think more holistically about both business and technology.
DT: What emerging technology trends do you believe will have the biggest impact on the IT industry in the near future, and how are you preparing your organization to adapt to these changes?
Arun: I believe Generative AI will have a profound impact on the IT industry, influencing areas such as VR/AR and the Metaverse. However, to fully harness the potential of AI, clean and refined data is crucial. At present, I’m focusing on preparing structured, high-quality data so that we’re ready to leverage AI to its fullest when the time comes.
