Germany-based YouTuber Dhruv Rathee was reportedly detained at his residence in Gurugram on Saturday morning ahead of a planned protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, according to police officials cited in media reports.
Rathee, who had recently travelled to India, was reportedly at his residence in Kendriya Vihar, Sector 56, when teams from Gurugram and Delhi Police approached him. Police said they had asked him not to travel to the national capital for the protest, for which permission had reportedly not been granted.
Police Urge Rathee Not to Travel to Delhi
According to a senior Gurugram Police official, Delhi Police had first reached Rathee’s residence and requested that he refrain from travelling to Delhi for the planned demonstration.
Gurugram Police teams subsequently visited the residence and also urged him to comply with the law and help maintain peace.
The circumstances surrounding the reported detention, including its legal basis and duration, were not detailed in the information available at the time of reporting.
Security Tightened Across Delhi
Delhi witnessed heightened security arrangements ahead of the planned demonstration at Jantar Mantar. According to reports, more than 40,000 Delhi Police and Central Armed Police Forces personnel were deployed across the national capital.
Authorities also installed barricades and spike strips at several locations as part of measures to manage crowds and prevent unauthorised gatherings.
The security arrangements followed concerns about the movement of protesters towards central Delhi and other sensitive locations.
Protest Linked to Electoral Roll Revision
The planned demonstration, led by Abhijeet Dipke and associated with CJP, was intended to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The allegations concerning the electoral roll revision remain a matter of political contention. The proposed protest was part of the wider debate over electoral processes and their implementation.
Questions Around Protest Restrictions
The reported detention comes amid heightened restrictions surrounding demonstrations in the national capital. The police had cited public order and security considerations while asking Rathee not to travel to Delhi.
Further details about the detention and the authorities’ actions would be needed to establish the precise legal circumstances of the incident.
The episode has brought renewed attention to the balance between maintaining public order and allowing peaceful political expression, particularly during demonstrations involving contentious electoral issues.
