Venezuela has been struck by two powerful earthquakes within seconds of each other, triggering widespread destruction across several regions, including the capital, Caracas. The twin tremors caused buildings to collapse, disrupted power supplies, and sparked panic among residents, leaving at least 32 people dead and more than 700 injured, according to Venezuelan authorities.

Twin Quakes Strike Within Seconds

The first earthquake, measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale, struck on Wednesday evening with its epicentre located west of the coastal town of Morón. Just 39 seconds later, a stronger 7.5 magnitude earthquake hit nearby, intensifying the destruction across affected areas.

The shallow depth of both earthquakes amplified the shaking, causing structural damage to residential and commercial buildings. More than 20 aftershocks were reported in the hours that followed, prompting authorities to urge people to remain in open areas as emergency teams assessed the situation.

Buildings Damaged, Airport Operations Suspended

Visuals circulating from Caracas and nearby regions showed frightened passengers rushing out of airport terminals as ceilings shook, lights flickered, and dust filled the air. Some travellers took shelter inside airport facilities while emergency personnel began evacuating affected zones.

Authorities have temporarily closed the country's main airport after reports of structural damage. Power outages and communication disruptions have also been reported in several areas, complicating rescue and relief efforts.

Emergency Declared as Rescue Efforts Continue

Venezuela's interim president, Delcy Rodríguez, has declared a nationwide state of emergency following the disaster. Rescue teams, medical personnel, and security forces have been deployed to search damaged buildings and assist injured residents.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has warned that the disaster could result in significantly higher casualties as assessment efforts continue. The agency also reported that the earthquakes triggered landslides in several regions, increasing risks for rescue workers and isolated communities.

Global Concern Over One of Venezuela's Strongest Quakes

Experts describe the twin earthquakes as among the most powerful to strike Venezuela in more than a century. Seismologists say the combination of high magnitude, shallow depth, and closely spaced tremors significantly increased the destructive impact.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences to the people of Venezuela, stating that India stands in solidarity with those affected and is prepared to extend all possible assistance if required.

As emergency responders continue rescue operations, authorities are expected to conduct detailed assessments of damaged infrastructure while monitoring the possibility of further aftershocks. The full extent of the destruction is likely to become clearer over the coming days as rescue and recovery efforts progress.
