Suvendu Adhikari was sworn in as the first Chief Minister from the Bharatiya Janata Party in West Bengal on Saturday, marking a historic political transition in a state that has long been dominated by regional and Left parties.
The swearing-in ceremony, held in Kolkata, turned into a major political show of strength for the BJP, with Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, members of the Union Cabinet, and chief ministers from BJP-ruled states attending the event.
The occasion was widely viewed as a symbolic milestone for the saffron party, which has spent years expanding its political footprint in eastern India.
Oath Taken in Bangla Carries Cultural Message
Adhikari took oath in Bangla, a move political observers interpreted as an effort to reinforce the BJP’s connection with Bengal’s linguistic and cultural identity.
Dressed in a saffron kurta, Adhikari’s simple appearance drew attention, with many noting similarities to the minimalist public image traditionally associated with former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
The BJP also strategically selected May 9 for the ceremony, coinciding with Rabindra Jayanti, the birth anniversary of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore.
The timing was seen as politically significant, especially amid long-standing criticism from opponents who have portrayed the BJP as a “North Indian party” disconnected from Bengal’s cultural ethos.
Diverse Cabinet Signals Social Outreach
Several senior BJP leaders took oath alongside Adhikari, including Agnimitra Paul, Nisith Pramanik, Dilip Ghosh, Ashok Kirtania, and Kshudiram Tudu.
The composition of the leadership team reflected the BJP’s attempt to broaden its social coalition in Bengal by including representatives from OBC, Rajbongshi, Matua, and tribal communities.
Political analysts believe the new administration will seek to consolidate support across diverse demographic groups as it transitions from opposition politics to governance.
From Mamata Ally to BJP’s Bengal Face
Adhikari’s rise to the state’s top post marks a dramatic political journey. Once considered one of Mamata Banerjee’s closest associates in the All India Trinamool Congress, he later switched to the BJP and emerged as one of its most influential leaders in Bengal.
His political stature grew significantly after defeating Banerjee in the high-profile Nandigram contest, which became one of the defining battles in Bengal politics.
The BJP’s victory in the Assembly elections ended the Trinamool Congress’s 15-year rule and handed the party its first-ever opportunity to govern the state.
Bengal Victory Holds National Significance for BJP
The BJP leadership has attached major ideological and political significance to its Bengal breakthrough. West Bengal is the birthplace of Syama Prasad Mookerjee, the founder of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the ideological predecessor of the BJP.
For the party, the formation of a government in Bengal represents not just an electoral victory but also the culmination of a long-term expansion strategy in eastern India.
With the oath-taking ceremony complete, attention will now shift toward cabinet formation, administrative restructuring, and the policy direction of the state’s first BJP-led government.
