Russia launched one of its largest overnight aerial attacks on Ukraine early Monday, killing at least 18 people and injuring more than 60, according to Ukrainian authorities. The assault, which primarily targeted Kyiv, came just days after another deadly strike in the capital that claimed 31 lives.
Hundreds of Drones and Missiles Launched
Ukraine's Air Force reported that Russia fired a massive barrage consisting of:
351 drones
68 missiles
during the overnight attack.
Officials said all 29 ballistic missiles launched during the strike successfully hit their intended targets, underscoring the growing challenges facing Ukraine's air defence network.
Air Defence Gaps Under Spotlight
The attack has once again exposed Ukraine's shortage of interceptor missiles needed to defend against ballistic threats.
Air Force spokesperson Yurii Ihnat acknowledged the challenge, stating that Ukraine urgently requires additional interception capabilities.
Pressure on Ukraine's Defences
The latest assault comes amid continued Russian missile and drone campaigns targeting critical infrastructure and urban centres. Ukrainian officials have repeatedly urged Western allies to accelerate deliveries of advanced air defence systems and interceptor missiles to counter increasingly sophisticated aerial attacks.
The strike highlights the growing pressure on Ukraine's defensive capabilities as the conflict continues with no immediate signs of easing.
