Padma Shri awardee Dr Girish Bharadwaj, popularly known as the "Bridge Man of India," passed away at the age of 76 on Tuesday at a private hospital in Sullia, Karnataka. Renowned for pioneering low-cost suspension bridge construction in rural India, Dr Bharadwaj leaves behind a remarkable legacy of engineering innovation and social service.
Passed Away After Heart-Related Illness
Dr Bharadwaj had been undergoing treatment for a heart-related ailment at KVG Hospital after his health deteriorated in recent days. He breathed his last in the early hours of Tuesday.
His demise marks the end of an extraordinary career dedicated to improving connectivity and transforming the lives of people in remote villages.
The 'Bridge Man of India'
An engineer by profession, Dr Bharadwaj earned nationwide recognition for developing affordable suspension bridge technology that made it possible to connect isolated rural communities at a fraction of conventional construction costs.
Over the course of his career, he built more than 140 suspension bridges across India, providing safe access to schools, healthcare facilities, markets, and essential services for thousands of people.
