One of India’s busiest transport hubs is gearing up for a major technological and infrastructural transformation as the redevelopment of the New Delhi Railway Station advances under the government’s ambitious Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. The project aims to turn the station into a “super smart” mobility hub equipped with artificial intelligence powered surveillance, expanded passenger facilities, and modern integrated infrastructure.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently shared a short video on social media platform X, offering a glimpse of the upcoming design and highlighting the rapid progress of the redevelopment work. The upgrade is expected to significantly enhance passenger flow, security, and overall travel experience at the national capital’s key railway gateway.
Massive AI Surveillance Network to Strengthen Security
As part of the smart transformation, the station will be equipped with more than 1,500 AI enabled cameras strategically installed across platforms, entry and exit points, concourses, and sensitive operational zones.
According to information shared by the Ministry of Railways and reported through official updates, these cameras will not only monitor movement but also assist in real time threat detection and anomaly identification.
A dedicated Exception Event Display based control room is also planned, which will process live surveillance feeds and immediately alert authorities in case of suspicious activity, overcrowding, or safety risks. This is expected to significantly improve response time and operational safety.
Additionally, all staff members and vendors working within the station premises will be issued standardized ID cards and jackets to ensure clear identification and better access control.
New Station Buildings to Handle Massive Passenger Footfall
Under the redevelopment plan, two new station buildings will be constructed near Platforms 1 and 16 after the demolition of existing structures.
As per Northern Railway’s Delhi Division, the new infrastructure will span approximately 1,09,000 square metres and will be designed to handle up to seven lakh passengers daily once fully operational.
The expansion is aimed at decongesting existing facilities while providing modern amenities aligned with international railway station standards. The redesigned structures will also include improved circulation areas to ensure smoother movement during peak travel hours.
Smarter Passenger Flow and Modern Holding Infrastructure
The redevelopment will introduce dedicated holding zones and apron areas designed to streamline passenger movement from elevated access roads directly to platforms.
These redesigned spaces are expected to reduce overcrowding, improve boarding efficiency, and enhance safety during high traffic periods such as festivals and holiday seasons.
Retail zones are also being integrated into the station design, creating a more organized and passenger friendly environment while supporting commercial activity within the station premises.
Seamless Multi Modal Connectivity with Delhi Metro Integration
A key highlight of the redevelopment plan is improved integration with Delhi’s transport network, particularly the Delhi Metro system.
The upgraded station will be designed to ensure seamless connectivity between rail and metro services, enabling smoother intermodal transfers for daily commuters and long distance passengers alike.
This integration is expected to strengthen last mile connectivity and position New Delhi Railway Station as a central mobility hub within the capital’s transport ecosystem.
Towards a Next Generation Railway Hub
Media reports and official briefings suggest that the redevelopment is part of a broader national push to modernize major railway stations across India under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. The focus is on combining technology, safety, and passenger convenience to redefine the role of railway stations beyond transit points.
Once completed, New Delhi Railway Station is expected to emerge as a next generation smart transport hub with advanced surveillance systems, expanded capacity, and improved urban connectivity, marking a significant shift in India’s railway infrastructure landscape.
