When Should People Stand?
According to the MHA's updated directions:
Citizens should stand at attention whenever the National Anthem is played.
The protocol is aimed at ensuring respect and dignity for the National Anthem during official ceremonies and public events.
Exception for Films and Documentaries
The ministry has clarified that people are not expected to stand if the National Anthem is played as part of a film, documentary, or newsreel.
The guidelines state that asking viewers to stand in such situations could:
Disrupt the screening of the film or documentary.
Create confusion and disorder in the auditorium.
Not necessarily enhance the dignity of the National Anthem.
