The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has assigned Lokhande Prashant Sitaram, a 2001-batch AGMUT cadre IAS officer, the additional charge of Chairperson of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). The appointment comes alongside his posting as Additional Secretary in the Department of Home under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
According to an official order issued by the ACC, Lokhande will hold both responsibilities simultaneously until a full-time CBSE Chairperson is appointed or until further orders are issued.
Dual Responsibilities Under New Appointment
Under the revised appointment terms, Lokhande will serve as:
Additional Secretary, Department of Home, Ministry of Home Affairs
Chairperson (Additional Charge), Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE)
The arrangement is temporary and will remain in effect until the government appoints a regular CBSE Chairperson.
Leadership Transition at CBSE
The appointment ensures continuity in the functioning of the country's largest school education board during the transition period. CBSE is responsible for conducting Class 10 and Class 12 board examinations, developing academic policies, affiliating schools across India and abroad, and implementing several education reforms in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
As Chairperson, Lokhande will oversee the board's administrative and policy functions while continuing his responsibilities in the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Experienced Civil Servant
Lokhande Prashant Sitaram belongs to the 2001 AGMUT (Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territories) cadre of the Indian Administrative Service. Over his career, he has held several key administrative positions across the AGMUT cadre and the Central Government.
His latest assignment reflects the government's decision to entrust him with leadership responsibilities in both internal administration and school education governance.
