The playoff race in the Indian Premier League 2026 season has entered its most dramatic phase yet, with just eight league matches remaining and qualification equations changing almost after every game.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru have officially become the first side to qualify for the playoffs after a dominant late-season surge, while Lucknow Super Giants and Mumbai Indians are now mathematically eliminated from the competition.

That leaves seven teams still fighting for the remaining three playoff positions in what has become one of the tightest IPL qualification battles in recent seasons. With net run rate, head-to-head contests and multiple tied-points scenarios all still in play, the final week of the league stage is expected to produce intense pressure cricket across the tournament.

RCB Become the Benchmark Team of IPL 2026

RCB’s qualification has not come through luck or favorable combinations, but through one of the most complete campaigns of the season.

The Bengaluru franchise has consistently dominated across departments, with their batting lineup delivering under pressure while the bowling unit has maintained control during crucial middle and death overs. Their strong net run rate has further separated them from the chasing pack.

According to the latest playoff projections, RCB are now guaranteed to finish at least tied at the top of the points table. Their worst possible outcome is a shared first-place finish alongside Gujarat Titans and Sunrisers Hyderabad.

The qualification also places RCB in a strong position to target a top-two finish, which offers the major playoff advantage of an additional opportunity to reach the final.

Gujarat Titans and SRH Hold Strong Control Over Qualification Race

Among the remaining contenders, Gujarat Titans appear closest to officially sealing qualification.

GT can now miss out only through an extremely complicated net run rate collapse involving multiple tied-point scenarios. Their current net run rate advantage has become a major asset at this stage of the competition.

Sunrisers Hyderabad are also strongly positioned, with projections giving them nearly an 88% probability of finishing inside the top four and a 50% chance of ending inside the top two.

SRH’s aggressive batting approach and improved bowling performances during the second half of the tournament have made them one of the most dangerous teams entering the final phase of the season.

CSK and Rajasthan Royals Face High-Pressure Final Stretch

Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals currently sit in the most delicate playoff zone.

Both teams remain alive with realistic qualification hopes, but neither controls its destiny completely anymore.

CSK currently hold a 44.9% probability of reaching the playoffs, while Rajasthan Royals stand marginally behind at 44.5%. However, both sides remain vulnerable to net run rate swings and unfavorable results elsewhere.

For CSK, consistency in the remaining matches will be critical, especially given their relatively balanced net run rate. Rajasthan Royals, meanwhile, suffered a major setback following their recent defeat, which significantly tightened their qualification equation.

Industry analysts and cricket observers believe 16 points may still become the unofficial qualification benchmark this season, although a few teams could still sneak through on 14 depending on net run rate scenarios and tied finishes.

PBKS, KKR and Delhi Capitals Still Alive but Running Out of Margin for Error

Punjab Kings remain mathematically alive, but their recent defeat has sharply reduced their playoff odds to nearly one in three.

PBKS can no longer mathematically finish in the top two, meaning their only path now lies through securing one of the lower playoff positions.

Delhi Capitals have emerged as the tournament’s surprise late challengers after keeping their campaign alive with a crucial victory over Rajasthan Royals.

Their playoff probability has now climbed to 19.5%, but Delhi still require multiple favorable outcomes from rival teams to qualify. Net run rate could also become decisive if tied-point situations emerge in the closing stages.

Kolkata Knight Riders remain mathematically in contention as well, though their chances stand at roughly 18%.

KKR’s qualification route is among the most difficult, with the team needing near-perfect results in remaining matches while also depending heavily on other teams dropping points.

Net Run Rate Could Decide the Final Playoff Spots

One of the biggest themes emerging from IPL 2026 is the growing importance of net run rate.

Several teams are expected to potentially finish level on points, meaning qualification may ultimately be decided not just by wins and losses, but by margins of victory and defeat accumulated across the tournament.

This has already influenced tactical decisions from teams during recent matches, where franchises have aggressively chased large wins or attempted to reduce defeat margins in order to protect their qualification chances.

According to current calculations, there are still 256 possible combinations of results remaining across the final eight matches, highlighting how open the playoff race still remains despite RCB’s confirmed qualification.

Final Week Set for One of IPL’s Most Intense Finishes

With only three playoff spots remaining and seven teams still mathematically alive, IPL 2026 is now heading toward a potentially chaotic and high-pressure conclusion.

Every remaining fixture could directly alter the qualification race, particularly matches involving CSK, RR, PBKS, DC and KKR, all of whom are fighting for survival with almost no room left for mistakes.

While RCB have already secured their place among the final four, the battle for the remaining spots is shaping up to be one of the most unpredictable playoff races the IPL has witnessed in recent years.
