Hyderabad: Hyderabad is set to witness a major transformation in its sporting infrastructure, with the Telangana government planning a mega cricket stadium near Bharat Future City that is expected to become the biggest cricket stadium in India, surpassing the capacity of the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
The proposed stadium is planned across around 100 acres at Begarikancha, near Bharat Future City, and is expected to have a seating capacity of more than 1.32 lakh spectators. The project is being envisioned as a world-class sporting and entertainment destination capable of hosting major international cricket matches as well as other large-scale events.
The development is part of Telangana’s broader vision to establish Bharat Future City as a modern global destination with advanced infrastructure, connectivity and large-scale public facilities. The proposed stadium is expected to benefit from its proximity to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, the Outer Ring Road and the proposed Regional Ring Road, making it accessible for domestic and international visitors.
Mega venue planned for global sporting events
Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy had announced plans for a new cricket stadium in the area in the Telangana Assembly in August 2024. Initial discussions were also held with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) regarding the proposed facility.
Unlike a conventional cricket ground, the planned stadium is being conceived as a multi-purpose venue. Apart from cricket, it is expected to accommodate football and other sporting events, along with international concerts, entertainment programmes and major public events.
The Telangana government has highlighted the stadium’s potential to attract some of the world’s biggest sporting and entertainment events to Hyderabad. A venue of this scale could also strengthen the city’s position on the international sporting map and create new opportunities for tourism, hospitality, retail and local businesses.
Bigger than Narendra Modi Stadium
The Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad currently holds the distinction of being the world’s largest cricket stadium, with a seating capacity of around 1.32 lakh. Hyderabad’s proposed venue is expected to exceed that capacity, potentially making it the largest cricket stadium in the country once completed.
The project also comes as Hyderabad continues to expand its role as a major technology, business and infrastructure hub. The development of Bharat Future City is expected to create a new growth corridor for the region, and the proposed stadium could become one of its landmark attractions.
With its massive scale, strategic location and multi-purpose design, the proposed stadium is expected to add a new dimension to Hyderabad’s sporting infrastructure and strengthen Telangana’s ambition to host major international sporting and entertainment events.
