Himachal Pradesh continues to face the impact of heavy rainfall and landslides, with more than 100 people reportedly losing their lives during the ongoing monsoon season. The persistent bad weather has disrupted transportation, damaged infrastructure, and caused significant economic losses across the hill state.
The latest disruption comes as a bus accident was reported in Chamba on Saturday morning, with preliminary information indicating that two people were killed after the vehicle plunged into a gorge. The incident comes amid a rise in road accidents and vehicles slipping on rain-affected mountain routes.
172 Roads Closed Across the State
Continuous rainfall and landslides have severely affected road connectivity. According to the latest information, 172 roads are currently closed, including 162 roads in rural areas, restricting the movement of residents and essential services.
Major roads have also witnessed traffic disruptions as rain and debris have affected normal vehicular movement. Authorities are working to restore connectivity in affected areas, although challenging weather and terrain conditions are making road clearance operations difficult.
Infrastructure Suffers Heavy Damage
The impact of the monsoon has extended beyond roads. Electricity and water supplies have also been affected in several areas, adding to the difficulties faced by residents.
The cumulative economic damage caused by rainfall, landslides, and related incidents has reportedly crossed ₹835 crore, highlighting the scale of the disruption to public infrastructure and local economic activity.
Travel and Daily Life Hit
Persistent rainfall has disrupted everyday life across Himachal Pradesh, particularly in vulnerable mountainous and rural regions. Blocked roads have affected commuters, isolated communities, and made the movement of emergency and essential services more challenging.
The situation has also increased concerns over road safety, with slippery surfaces, falling debris, and landslides creating additional risks for motorists and public transport.
Authorities Remain on Alert
With the monsoon continuing, authorities are monitoring vulnerable locations and undertaking road restoration and relief operations wherever required. Residents in landslide-prone areas have been advised to remain cautious and follow official weather and travel advisories.
