Google has agreed to a $50 million settlement in a racial discrimination lawsuit brought by current and former Black employees who alleged longstanding inequities in hiring practices, compensation, career advancement, and workplace treatment at the company.

The case, originally filed in 2022 by former Google employee April Curley, accused the technology giant of maintaining systemic barriers that disadvantaged Black workers across multiple levels of the organization.

The settlement, announced in May 2025 and granted final approval this week, marks one of the most closely watched employment discrimination cases involving the technology sector in recent years.

Lawsuit Alleged Structural Inequality

According to the lawsuit, Black employees at Google were allegedly directed toward lower-level and lower-paying positions while facing limited opportunities for promotion and advancement compared to other employees.

The complaint also alleged that workers who raised concerns about discrimination or workplace inequities encountered hostile treatment within the organization.

What began as an individual complaint later evolved into a broader class-action case after additional former Google employees joined the lawsuit.

Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who represented the plaintiffs, described the settlement as a significant accountability moment for the technology industry.

In a statement, Crump said the case highlighted longstanding barriers Black professionals continue to face in Silicon Valley and across the broader tech ecosystem.

Google Denies Wrongdoing

While agreeing to the settlement, Google stated that it strongly disputes allegations that it improperly treated employees based on race.

The company previously said it remains committed to maintaining consistency in hiring, compensation, and career-leveling practices across its workforce.

As is common in large corporate settlements, the agreement does not necessarily represent an admission of wrongdoing by the company.

The case nevertheless places renewed attention on diversity, equity, and inclusion challenges that have persisted within the global technology industry despite years of public commitments to workplace reform.

Broader Concerns Over Diversity in Tech

The lawsuit echoed broader concerns raised by Black employees and researchers within major technology companies over the past decade.

Among the most prominent controversies was the 2020 departure of AI ethics researcher Timnit Gebru, who said she was forced out of Google after disagreements surrounding a research paper examining risks tied to emerging artificial intelligence systems.

Gebruโ€™s departure sparked widespread debate across the tech industry about diversity, academic freedom, and the treatment of minority voices within AI research and corporate leadership structures.

The latest settlement may further intensify scrutiny around workplace equity in Silicon Valley as companies continue expanding artificial intelligence operations while facing pressure to improve internal representation and inclusion practices.

Tech Industry Faces Growing Legal and Cultural Pressure

Over the past several years, major technology companies have faced increasing legal, political, and public pressure over allegations involving workplace discrimination, unequal pay, hiring bias, and underrepresentation of minority groups in leadership and engineering roles.

While many firms introduced diversity initiatives following industry-wide criticism, advocacy groups and former employees have argued that measurable structural progress has often remained slow.

Employment experts say large settlements such as Googleโ€™s may encourage more companies to reassess internal promotion systems, compensation structures, employee grievance procedures, and diversity accountability frameworks.
