India’s food safety regulator has stepped up its enforcement activities, with more than 150 notices issued to food business operators in recent months over alleged misleading advertisements, false claims and non-compliance with labelling requirements.
According to information shared by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and reported by multiple media outlets, several prominent food, beverage and consumer brands have been named among the businesses facing regulatory action. The list reportedly includes Nestlé India, PepsiCo India, Coca-Cola India, Abbott India, Red Bull India, Danone India, Monster Energy India, Mondelez India, Ferrero India and Kenvue, among others.
It is important to note that the notices relate to regulatory scrutiny and alleged non-compliance. The issuance of a notice does not, by itself, establish wrongdoing or mean that any company has been found guilty of a violation.
FSSAI Steps Up Enforcement
As per the regulator's recent enforcement update, the notices cover concerns relating to misleading advertisements, false claims and labelling non-compliances. FSSAI has also reportedly taken action against various food business operators over what it described as serious violations of applicable food safety laws and regulations.
The regulator has further stated that products from several companies have been seized as part of its enforcement activities. Energy drink and alcoholic beverage manufacturers have also come under scrutiny as authorities examine compliance with relevant food safety, advertising and labelling requirements.
E-Commerce Platforms Also Face Notices
The enforcement action has reportedly extended beyond food manufacturers and brand owners to online marketplaces.
According to FSSAI's update, 12 notices were issued to e-commerce companies including Amazon and Flipkart. The regulator also stated that one Amazon warehouse licence had been cancelled.
The action highlights the growing regulatory focus on the wider food supply chain, including the platforms through which packaged food and other consumable products reach customers.
Restaurant Chains Also Under Scrutiny
The regulatory action has also reportedly covered food service establishments. FSSAI said more than 30 notices were issued to establishments including KFC, McDonald's, Pizza Hut, Domino's and Costa Coffee.
According to the regulator's account, five Domino's licences were suspended as part of the enforcement action. These developments have been reported by PTI and several other media organisations based on FSSAI's statement.
The regulator had also issued notices to several five-star hotels in the previous year, indicating that its compliance checks extend across different segments of the food service industry.
Companies Taking Corrective Steps
FSSAI has reportedly said that several companies have already started taking corrective measures following the notices. Such measures can include changes to product labels, advertising claims or other compliance practices.
The latest enforcement drive comes as regulators continue to place greater emphasis on transparency in food advertising and product labelling. For companies, the increased scrutiny means that claims made on packaging and in marketing campaigns need to align closely with applicable regulatory requirements.
For consumers, the development reinforces the importance of checking product information and understanding claims made on food and beverage packaging.
