Heavy rainfall triggered devastating flash floods and landslides across the border districts of Poonch and Rajouri in Jammu and Kashmir, leaving at least 11 people dead and several others missing. The extreme weather caused extensive damage to homes, roads, and public infrastructure, prompting authorities to launch large-scale rescue and relief operations.
Officials said Poonch district, located in the Pir Panjal region, bore the brunt of the disaster. In the Lower Murrah area of Bufliaz in Surankote tehsil, flash floods swept away several houses. Rescue teams recovered six bodies from the affected locality, while efforts continue to trace at least four missing civilians.
Rescue Teams Race Against Time
Emergency response teams, including local administration, disaster response personnel, police, and other agencies, have been deployed to the affected areas to search for missing people and assist stranded residents. Rescue operations remain challenging due to damaged roads, continuous rainfall, and difficult terrain.
Authorities are also assessing the extent of damage to residential properties, roads, bridges, and other essential infrastructure affected by the floods and landslides.
Centre Assures Full Assistance
The evolving situation was reviewed at the highest levels of government. Union Home Minister Amit Shah was briefed on the disaster and the ongoing rescue efforts. According to officials, the Home Minister assured both the Lieutenant Governor and the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir of the Centre's full support in relief, rescue, and rehabilitation efforts to ensure the safety of affected residents.
The administration has urged people living in vulnerable areas to remain alert and follow official advisories as weather conditions continue to be monitored.
