A devastating road accident on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway in Rajasthan claimed the lives of eight people and left 22 others injured after a passenger bus collided with a truck and burst into flames in the early hours of Wednesday.
The tragic incident occurred in Dausa district between 2:30 a.m. and 3:00 a.m., prompting a large-scale rescue operation by local authorities and emergency responders.
Bus Engulfed in Flames After Collision
According to officials, the passenger bus, carrying approximately 37 passengers, was travelling from Haridwar in Uttarakhand to Indore in Madhya Pradesh when it rammed into a truck on the expressway.
The impact of the collision sparked a massive fire that quickly engulfed the vehicle, making rescue efforts challenging and resulting in multiple casualties.
Authorities initially confirmed six fatalities, but the death toll later rose to eight as rescue and recovery operations progressed.
Injured Shifted to Nearby Hospitals
Emergency services rushed to the scene soon after the accident was reported. Rescue teams evacuated survivors from the burning bus and transported the injured to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.
Officials said 22 passengers sustained injuries, with some reported to be in serious condition. Medical teams are continuing to monitor and treat those affected by the accident.
The bodies of the deceased were shifted to the district hospital as authorities completed recovery operations.
Investigation Underway
Police have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident. Officials are examining factors such as vehicle speed, road conditions, driver fatigue, and visibility at the time of the collision.
Eyewitnesses at the scene described the fire as spreading rapidly after the impact, leaving passengers with little time to escape.
Authorities are expected to inspect both vehicles as part of the ongoing inquiry.
Road Safety Concerns Remain
The accident is another reminder of the risks associated with long-distance overnight travel on India's highways. Despite improvements in expressway infrastructure, collisions involving heavy vehicles continue to result in serious casualties.
Road safety experts have repeatedly emphasized the importance of strict enforcement of speed limits, regular vehicle maintenance, driver rest schedules, and emergency response preparedness to reduce fatalities on highways.
