The Delhi High Court on Tuesday (July 21, 2026) directed that climate activist Sonam Wangchuk be immediately shifted from Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi to Medanta Hospital in Gurugram, citing concerns over his health after an extended hunger strike.
Wangchuk has been on an indefinite hunger strike for 24 days in solidarity with the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) student protest. The prolonged fast has drawn nationwide attention and prompted growing concern from supporters, medical professionals, and public figures over his deteriorating physical condition.
Court Emphasises Protection of Fundamental Rights
In its order, the High Court observed that the transfer to Medanta Hospital was necessary to ensure Wangchuk's safety and uphold his fundamental rights under Articles 19 and 21 of the Constitution, which relate to freedom of expression and the protection of life and personal liberty.
The court's direction came amid ongoing legal proceedings concerning Wangchuk's health and the circumstances surrounding his hospitalisation following weeks of fasting.
Health Concerns Intensify
Medical concerns have steadily increased as Wangchuk's hunger strike continued beyond three weeks. His supporters have repeatedly raised alarms over his physical condition, while authorities have maintained that medical intervention has been undertaken in accordance with legal directives and healthcare protocols.
The High Court's order aims to ensure that the activist receives appropriate medical care while preserving his legal and constitutional rights.
Protest Continues to Draw National Attention
Wangchuk's hunger strike, launched in support of the CJP student protest, has evolved into a major national issue, prompting political reactions, legal interventions, and public demonstrations across the country.
The latest judicial directive marks another significant development in the ongoing matter, with attention now shifting to Wangchuk's treatment at Medanta Hospital and the future course of the protest. Further updates are expected as medical authorities and the court continue to monitor the situation.
