Authorities in Chandigarh have directed police to prevent a proposed ‘iPhone langar’ scheduled for September 22, citing concerns that a large gathering could create a serious crowd-management and safety risk.
Event Announced on Social Media
The proposed event was publicised on social media by Rakesh Trehan, an Amritsar-based businessman who is known online as ‘Raja D King’.
Trehan had announced plans to distribute iPhone 17 and higher models as “prasad” in Chandigarh and Mohali on September 22. The unusual announcement quickly attracted attention online, raising questions about the expected turnout and arrangements for the event.
Administration Raises Crowd Safety Concerns
Chandigarh Deputy Commissioner Nishant Yadav directed the police on Saturday not to permit the proposed gathering.
The administration's primary concern is the possibility of a large number of people turning up at the location. Officials believe that without adequate crowd-control arrangements, such a gathering could potentially result in a stampede-like situation.
The decision comes as authorities seek to prevent an uncontrolled crowd from forming around an event that had been widely promoted through social media.
iPhone Distribution Was Promoted as ‘Prasad’
According to the announcement, the planned distribution was to involve iPhone 17 and newer models being given away as “prasad.”
The announcement generated significant interest because of the value of the devices and the unusual nature of the proposed giveaway. However, the administration has now stepped in citing public safety considerations.
Police Asked to Prevent the Gathering
Following the Deputy Commissioner's direction, Chandigarh Police have been asked to ensure that the proposed event does not take place as announced.
The development highlights the challenges authorities can face when social media announcements attract large crowds without a clearly established system for entry, crowd control and public safety.
For now, the proposed September 22 ‘iPhone langar’ in Chandigarh and Mohali has been stopped by the administration over concerns surrounding crowd management and safety.
