Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) plans to invest $1 billion in Meta Platforms’ equity offering as the two companies expand their collaboration to support Meta’s growing artificial intelligence infrastructure requirements.
Announced on Tuesday, the investment highlights AMD’s expanding relationship with Meta, which is deploying computing infrastructure to support AI models, agent-based applications and large-scale recommendation systems. AMD also confirmed that its Helios computing systems are running at Meta, with initial installations undergoing testing ahead of a broader deployment.
AMD Helios Systems Enter Testing at Meta
AMD said its initial Helios systems have been installed at Meta and are being tested as the companies prepare for wider deployment.
Helios is part of AMD’s effort to expand its position in AI infrastructure, where demand for high-performance computing systems has increased as technology companies develop and operate increasingly capable AI models.
The testing phase will help establish how the systems perform within Meta’s infrastructure before deployment expands. The companies have not provided further details in the information available about the scale or timeline of the broader rollout.
EPYC Processors Support Meta’s AI Workloads
AMD said Meta has deployed millions of EPYC processors across multiple generations. These CPUs support the computing requirements of Meta’s large-scale technology infrastructure.
AMD also said its Instinct graphics processing units (GPUs) are already being used in production for AI training, ranking and recommendation systems.
These workloads are central to operating digital platforms, where AI systems help process information, generate predictions and personalise content for users. The expanded collaboration gives AMD a larger role across different parts of Meta’s computing environment.
AMD Technology Powers Meta’s Muse AI Models
The chipmaker said its EPYC processors power Meta’s Muse AI agent and that its technology supports the Muse Spark Open and Muse Glimmer models.
The deployment reflects the importance of combining general-purpose processors with specialised AI accelerators to support different stages of AI development and operation.
For AMD, supplying technology across Meta’s infrastructure could strengthen its position in a market where major technology companies are investing heavily in computing capacity to develop and run AI applications.
$1 Billion Investment Deepens Strategic Ties
AMD’s planned $1 billion investment in Meta’s equity offering adds a financial dimension to their expanding technology partnership.
The move brings together AMD’s ambitions in high-performance computing and AI hardware with Meta’s demand for infrastructure to support its AI development plans. However, the investment and the expansion of technical deployments are distinct elements of the relationship.
As Meta continues to scale its AI operations, the performance and deployment of systems such as Helios will be important indicators of how AMD competes for infrastructure business alongside other major chip suppliers.
The partnership underscores the growing interdependence between AI developers and semiconductor companies, as access to computing capacity becomes a key factor in building and operating advanced AI systems.
