The journey to the renowned Banke Bihari Temple in Vrindavan is set to become significantly smoother as the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) moves forward with its ambitious ₹6,922 crore Mathura Heritage City Project. The project has gained momentum after the approval of its tender, with the next stage involving Cabinet clearance followed by the selection of a developer for execution.
Designed to modernise infrastructure while improving the pilgrimage experience, the project seeks to address the long-standing traffic congestion that affects millions of devotees visiting Mathura and Vrindavan every year.
New 15.3-km Road to Bypass City Traffic
A key component of the project is the construction of a 15.3-kilometre road connecting National Highway-44 (NH-44) with the Yamuna Expressway. The new route is expected to provide a direct and faster approach to the temple area, allowing visitors to avoid the heavily congested roads within Mathura and Vrindavan.
The proposed corridor will further connect to a planned suspension bridge over the Yamuna River, creating a seamless transport link for pilgrims travelling from Delhi, Noida, Greater Noida, Ghaziabad, Agra, and other cities connected through the Yamuna Expressway.
Improving Pilgrim Experience and Regional Connectivity
The dedicated connectivity corridor is expected to reduce travel time and ease traffic pressure in the temple town, particularly during festivals and peak pilgrimage seasons when visitor numbers surge dramatically.
By diverting through traffic away from the city's narrow roads, the project is also expected to improve local mobility while enhancing safety and convenience for residents and visitors alike.
Heritage Development with Modern Infrastructure
The Mathura Heritage City Project is envisioned as a comprehensive urban development initiative that combines improved transport infrastructure with heritage preservation and tourism development.
