A four-year-old boy who fell into an open 220-foot-deep borewell in Haryana's Ambala district has died despite an intensive rescue operation that lasted nearly 21 hours.
The child, identified as Nirvair Singh, was rescued in the early hours of Wednesday but was declared dead shortly after being taken to a nearby hospital, bringing a tragic end to a mission that had drawn widespread public attention.
Child Fell into Open Borewell While Visiting Fields
The incident occurred around 6:30 a.m. on June 30 in Dhaneora village of Ambala district.
According to officials, Nirvair had accompanied his father, Manjit, to the family's agricultural fields to deliver food to his grandfather, Karnail Singh, when he accidentally fell into the uncovered borewell.
The accident triggered an immediate emergency response involving multiple government agencies and rescue teams.
Rescue Teams Worked Through the Night
Authorities launched a large-scale rescue operation soon after receiving information about the incident. Specialized teams worked continuously for more than 21 hours, employing heavy machinery and rescue equipment to safely reach the trapped child.
Nirvair was finally pulled out of the borewell at approximately 3:40 a.m. on July 1 and was immediately shifted by ambulance to the Civil Hospital in Ambala Cantonment.
Doctors, however, declared him dead despite the rescue team's prolonged efforts.
Borewell Safety Under Fresh Scrutiny
The tragedy has once again highlighted the persistent danger posed by abandoned or unsecured borewells across the country. Similar incidents over the years have prompted repeated calls for stricter enforcement of safety regulations, including the mandatory sealing or covering of unused borewells.
Authorities have previously issued guidelines requiring landowners to properly secure borewells to prevent such accidents, but incidents continue to surface from different parts of India.
Calls for Stronger Preventive Measures
The heartbreaking loss of the young child is expected to renew demands for stricter monitoring of open borewells and greater accountability in ensuring public safety, particularly in rural areas where agricultural borewells are common.
As investigations into the incident continue, the tragedy serves as another reminder of the urgent need to eliminate hazardous open borewells and strengthen preventive measures to avoid similar accidents in the future.
