Starbucks has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Tamil Nadu government to establish its first Global Capability Centre (GCC) in India, with Chennai selected as the location for the company’s new technology hub.
The agreement was signed with Guidance, the state government’s nodal agency under the industries department, in the presence of Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay Anand Varadarajan. The planned GCC will operate independently of Starbucks’ retail business joint venture in India with Tata Consumer Products and will focus on developing new solutions and supporting the company’s business expansion.
800 Technology Jobs Planned in Initial Phase
Starbucks plans to hire around 800 employees in Tamil Nadu during the initial phase of the GCC. The centre is expected to create a dedicated technology base for the company as it looks to develop new solutions and strengthen its capabilities.
According to Starbucks’ Chief Technology Officer, India is an important market for the company, while Chennai offers several factors that influenced the location decision. These include a large pool of skilled technology professionals, relatively low attrition, strong infrastructure and incentives offered by the Tamil Nadu government.
The combination of technology talent and the state’s infrastructure is expected to support Starbucks as it develops new solutions and expands its business through the GCC.
GCC to Operate Separately from Retail JV
The Chennai centre will have a distinct role from Starbucks’ retail operations in India. While Starbucks operates its retail business in the country through a joint venture with Tata Consumer Products, the new GCC will function independently and focus on technology and business capabilities.
The move reflects the growing role of India as a technology and capability hub for global companies, with Chennai being positioned as a location offering access to skilled professionals and an established technology ecosystem.
Tamil Nadu Welcomes Starbucks Investment
Tamil Nadu Industries Minister S Keerthana welcomed Starbucks’ decision to establish the GCC in the state, describing the development as a partnership between Tamil Nadu and the global coffee company.
She said in a post on X, “Tamil Nadu x Starbucks, a partnership blended to perfection. Delighted to welcome Starbucks GCC to Tamil Nadu. Our Government today signed an MoU with Starbucks to establish its Global Capability Centre in Chennai, in presence of Hon'ble Chief Minister Thiru C. Joseph Vijay. This will create 800 high value jobs in the first phase.”
Chief Minister Vijay also welcomed the investment, stating that the decision by a globally recognised company to choose Chennai reflects confidence in the capabilities of Tamil Nadu’s young workforce.
The state government also expects the Starbucks investment to demonstrate Tamil Nadu’s attractiveness as a destination for other high-quality global companies.
With its first India GCC planned for Chennai and around 800 technology professionals targeted in the initial phase, Starbucks is expanding its technology presence in the country beyond its retail operations and establishing a dedicated base for developing new solutions and supporting business growth.
