Karnataka has announced plans to establish India's first government-led Artificial Intelligence (AI) University along with a dedicated AI Hub, marking a major step in the state's efforts to strengthen AI research, innovation, talent development, and digital transformation. The announcement was made by Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar while inaugurating Google I/O Connect India 2026 at the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre (BIEC).

The proposed initiatives are expected to position Karnataka at the forefront of India's artificial intelligence ecosystem by fostering collaboration between academia, industry, startups, and government agencies. According to the state government, the AI University will serve as a centre for advanced education and research, while the AI Hub will accelerate innovation through incubation and industry partnerships.

AI University to Drive Research and Talent Development

The proposed AI University aims to develop a skilled workforce capable of addressing the growing demand for AI expertise across industries. According to the Chief Minister, the institution will focus on nurturing world-class AI talent, promoting cutting-edge research, and encouraging collaboration between universities, technology companies, startups, and public institutions.

The university is expected to support research in emerging technologies while helping bridge the gap between academic learning and industry requirements, enabling students and researchers to contribute to India's rapidly evolving AI landscape.

AI Hub to Support Startups and Enterprise Innovation

Alongside the university, Karnataka will establish a dedicated AI Hub to serve as an innovation and incubation centre for startups, enterprises, researchers, and technology developers.

The hub will provide an ecosystem for developing AI-driven products, conducting applied research, and facilitating collaboration among stakeholders working across artificial intelligence, machine learning, cloud computing, and advanced digital technologies.

According to industry observers, such collaborative innovation centres are becoming increasingly important as governments worldwide seek to accelerate AI commercialization while supporting startup ecosystems and enterprise adoption.

Karnataka Eyes an 'AI-Native State'

During his address, Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar described artificial intelligence as the defining technological revolution of the current era and outlined Karnataka's ambition of becoming an "AI-native State."

He said the government intends to integrate AI across public services to improve governance and citizen experiences. The vision includes leveraging AI to enhance education, healthcare, agriculture, urban mobility, climate resilience, and public administration.

The Chief Minister emphasized that artificial intelligence should empower teachers, improve healthcare outcomes, support farmers with better advisory services, simplify access to government services, and help small businesses become more competitive in the digital economy.

Building on Karnataka's Technology Leadership

Highlighting Karnataka's technology ecosystem, Shivakumar noted that the state contributes nearly 40% of India's software exports and is home to more than 17,000 startups as well as thousands of Global Capability Centres (GCCs).

He added that the government will continue investing in digital infrastructure, including data centres and advanced computing facilities, to support growing AI workloads, cloud adoption, and next-generation technology development.

According to industry reports, Karnataka continues to remain India's largest technology hub, attracting significant investments in artificial intelligence, cloud computing, semiconductor design, and digital engineering.

Google Invited to Deepen AI Collaboration

Addressing the gathering at Google I/O Connect India 2026, the Chief Minister invited Google to expand its collaboration with Karnataka by supporting AI-driven initiatives across education, healthcare, agriculture, governance, urban mobility, and climate resilience.

He also encouraged the company to work closely with startups, strengthen AI learning opportunities for students, and contribute to building a globally competitive AI ecosystem in the state.

Strengthening India's AI Ecosystem

The announcement comes at a time when governments, enterprises, and educational institutions across India are increasing investments in artificial intelligence, digital infrastructure, and advanced computing capabilities. According to industry reports, demand for AI talent continues to grow rapidly across sectors, driving the need for specialized research institutions and innovation ecosystems.

With the proposed AI University and AI Hub, Karnataka aims to strengthen its leadership in India's technology sector while creating a platform for research, entrepreneurship, responsible AI development, and future-ready digital skills. The initiative is expected to play an important role in supporting the state's long-term vision of becoming a global centre for artificial intelligence and emerging technologies.
