Indiaโs quick-commerce industry is stepping up its focus on food safety as regulatory scrutiny of dark stores and food-storage facilities intensifies across major markets. Leading platforms Blinkit, Zepto and Swiggy Instamart are reportedly increasing hiring for quality-check and food-safety roles to strengthen compliance across their rapidly expanding networks.
According to a Mint report, the three platforms together have at least 94 open positions for quality-checker roles in Bengaluru. The hiring activity highlights how food-safety compliance is becoming an increasingly important operational priority for quick-commerce companies, particularly as their dark-store networks expand to serve growing consumer demand.
Maharashtra Inspections Put Dark Stores Under Spotlight
The hiring push comes amid intensified enforcement by food-safety authorities. On August 13, Maharashtraโs Food and Drug Administration (FDA) conducted inspections at 86 facilities, including dark stores and food-storage locations associated with Blinkit, Zepto and Swiggy Instamart.
The inspections reportedly identified several food-safety lapses. These included cockroach infestations, expired inventory and cold-storage facilities operating at temperatures above prescribed limits. Such findings have placed greater attention on the processes used by quick-commerce companies to store, monitor and dispatch food and other temperature-sensitive products.
As part of the broader enforcement action, the Maharashtra FDA suspended 14 licences. Five were associated with Blinkit, five with Zepto and two with Swiggy Instamart, highlighting the seriousness of compliance requirements for operators handling food products.
Regulatory Focus Expands Beyond Maharashtra
Food-safety scrutiny is no longer limited to Maharashtra. Karnataka authorities have also stepped up inspections and enforcement activities involving dark stores, while operators across Delhi-NCR are preparing for potentially tougher checks as regulatory attention spreads.
For quick-commerce companies, the challenge is particularly significant because their business model depends on maintaining large inventories close to consumers while delivering orders within minutes. Ensuring proper storage temperatures, inventory rotation, hygiene standards and timely removal of expired products requires consistent monitoring across hundreds of locations.
Quality Control Becomes a Key Operational Priority
The latest hiring activity indicates that quick-commerce platforms are moving to strengthen their internal quality-control systems rather than relying solely on periodic external inspections.
As regulatory expectations rise, food safety could increasingly become a critical differentiator in the sector. For Blinkit, Zepto and Swiggy Instamart, building stronger compliance teams and standardised processes across dark stores may be essential to maintaining consumer trust while supporting the next phase of quick-commerce growth.
