Nikon India Pvt. Ltd. announced the upcoming release of Firmware Version 2.00 for the Nikon ZR, marking its first major firmware update since the camera’s launch in October 2025.
This firmware update introduces new creative possibilities and practical enhancements designed to give professional filmmakers and content creators greater control throughout the production process.
“This announcement reflects our continued commitment to supporting visual storytellers and creators with solutions guided by customer insights and real-world creative needs, enabling them to push creative boundaries and capture the world exactly as they see it.” – Sajjan Kumar, Managing Director, Nikon India Pvt. Ltd.
Among the key additions is support for RED’s Log3G10 gamma and REDWideGamutRGB colour gamut when recording in H.265, bringing RED colour science to a more compact video format. This allows filmmakers to benefit from smaller file sizes and longer recording times, making it a practical option for productions where storage capacity and recording duration are key considerations.
Firmware Version 2.00 also introduces adjustable High ISO Noise Reduction settings, expanded customisation of command dials and function buttons, and enhancements to focus peaking displays and image previewing. Together, these improvements make the ZR better suited to different production needs.
What’s new in Nikon ZR Firmware Version 2.00
1. Support for RED colour science with compact H.265 recording
Log3G10 gamma*1 has been added to the tone mode options for recording in the H.265 format, enabling shooting in the REDWideGamutRGB*2 colour gamut. As a result, even footage recorded in the compact H.265 format can be produced with the high colour-grading latitude made possible by RED colour science, with its smooth tonal gradation and exceptionally wide colour gamut.
This option may suit creators who want to work with RED colour science in an H.265 workflow.
High ISO Noise Reduction can also be set to one of four levels when shooting in:
H.265/Log3G10
H.265/N-Log
Prores422HQ/N-Log
Creators can choose a setting to balance detail and smoothness for their project, subject or delivery requirements
2. Custom controls for faster operation
Firmware Version 2.00 lets users assign the following settings to the command dials:
ISO sensitivity
Exposure compensation
White balance (WB)
Colour temperature (WBK)
Users can also assign [3D LUT/View Assist] to an Fn button, allowing them to switch between these settings with a single operation. This makes it easier to adjust settings without looking away from the monitor, so they can stay focused on capturing their intended shots.
3. Monitoring and focus-assist enhancements
Focus peaking display is now supported even when a 3D LUT is applied during recording in R3D NE*3 format. This helps filmmakers and content creators confirm precise focus even with shallow depth of field while previewing the final look.
Support for applying a 3D LUT to HDMI video output makes it possible to check a rendering close to the finished image, even on an external monitor.
4. Reduced flicker in dark areas
New processing suppresses frame-by-frame fluctuations in black level, helping reduce visible flicker in shadows, particularly in high-ISO scenes. This can help produce more consistent-looking footage in low-light environments with large areas of shadow.
