AMD Launches Ryzen 5 7500 and Ryzen 5 5500F Desktop Processors for AM5 and AM4 Platforms

While the Ryzen 5 7500 is designed for users moving to an AM5-based system, the Ryzen 5 5500F targets those who want to build or upgrade an affordable AM4 PC without replacing their existing DDR4 memory and compatible motherboard.

AMD has expanded its desktop processor portfolio with two new Ryzen 5 chips aimed at different segments of the PC market. The company has launched the Ryzen 5 7500 for the newer AM5 platform and the Ryzen 5 5500F for the established AM4 platform, giving users more options across both current and previous-generation desktop systems.

The launch stands out because AMD is continuing to address two very different groups of PC buyers. While the Ryzen 5 7500 is designed for users moving to an AM5-based system, the Ryzen 5 5500F targets those who want to build or upgrade an affordable AM4 PC without replacing their existing DDR4 memory and compatible motherboard.

AMD Ryzen 5 7500: Zen 4 Performance on AM5

The Ryzen 5 7500 is the newer of the two processors and is based on AMD’s Zen 4 architecture. Designed for the AM5 socket, it comes with six cores and 12 threads, offering a base clock speed of 3.7GHz and boost speeds of up to 5GHz.

The processor features 6MB of L2 cache and 32MB of L3 cache. It also supports AMD technologies including EXPO memory overclocking and Precision Boost Overdrive, giving enthusiasts additional options for tuning system performance.

One of the biggest differences between the Ryzen 5 7500 and the 5500F is integrated graphics. The Ryzen 5 7500 includes built-in Radeon Graphics, allowing the processor to deliver basic display output without requiring a dedicated graphics card.

This could make the chip particularly useful for mainstream PC users who want to build a system initially without a discrete GPU and add a graphics card later. For gaming and demanding graphics workloads, however, a dedicated GPU would still be the preferred choice.

Ryzen 5 5500F Keeps the AM4 Platform in Play

The Ryzen 5 5500F takes a different route, targeting AMD’s long-running AM4 ecosystem. Based on the Zen 3 architecture, the processor also features six cores and 12 threads, with a 3GHz base clock and boost speeds of up to 4.4GHz.

It comes with 3MB of L2 cache and 16MB of L3 cache and, unlike the Ryzen 5 7500, does not include integrated graphics. Users opting for the 5500F will therefore require a discrete graphics card.

However, its biggest advantage is platform compatibility. The processor works with a range of AM4 chipsets, including B450, B550, A520 and X570, allowing existing AM4 users to upgrade their CPU without necessarily moving to a completely new platform.

The Ryzen 5 5500F also supports overclocking and DDR4 memory, making it an interesting proposition for cost-conscious PC builders who already have AM4 hardware.

AMD Offers Two Paths for Budget PC Buyers

Both processors feature a 65W TDP, support Precision Boost 2 and come bundled with AMD’s Wraith Stealth thermal solution. However, their positioning is clearly different.

The Ryzen 5 7500 provides an entry point into the newer AM5 ecosystem, while the Ryzen 5 5500F extends the usefulness of the AM4 platform. This gives buyers a choice between investing in a newer platform or maximising the value of hardware they already own.

The distinction could become particularly important for budget PC buyers as memory prices continue to influence the overall cost of system upgrades. An AM4-based Ryzen 5 5500F system can continue using DDR4, potentially reducing the cost of an upgrade for existing users.
